The UK’s Zachary Mason playfully plays with the idea about simplifying these things on his latest single, “I Wish Humans Were Made in a Factory.” Life gets a little complicated, right? I think for most of us it seems that way. From the “big picture” of things such as geopolitics to our more personal situations such as our love lives. Caveat after caveat!
In contrast to my own admittedly dystopian inclination to suggest that perhaps we already are dude, we already are maaannn….the song is not intended to get that subjectively heavy about it. Rather, it’s a fun, catchy, shoegaze tune humorously toying with the notion of just getting to the point and bypassing the drama of day-to-day life. It was released on February 15th, check it out!

The song also features quite a few notable collaborations. At bass you have John Thomasson, the current bass player of the Alabama Country band Little Big Town, as well as some great contributions at drums by a recurring collaborator Nate Barnes. Hong Kong producer, Derrick Lin, contributed mixing and mastering engineering. Another neat example of today’s technological abilities to leverage and maximize worldwide collaborative work.
“If you’ve never come across my work before, I hope you have an enjoyable listening experience! This latest single of mine is full of fun and quirkiness, and I had a great time making it! If you like rock music, that blends the old with the new, then this one is definitely for you! There’s some catchy guitars in there and some unusual lyrics which make for an entertaining listen… I hope you have fun in the factory!” Zachary Mason
Then of course, there’s Mason himself taking on everything else songwriting, producing, and performance wise. In this eighth single released to date, he finds himself further exploring into the realm of Indie Rock sound wise. I’m particularly fond of the guitar work, a nice crunchy yet clean reverb guitar tone carries the rhythm and Mason’s lead licks throughout the track are melodic and tasteful. The hook is a catchy melody that you will find humming to yourself throughout the day. It reminds me of some of my favorite alternative artists of the 90s. The Pixies come to mind as I listen to it, and I think that’s a great recommendation for fans of that sound.
In closing, I’m thankful that we are not made in factories, as we would miss out on what I think is a beautiful human touch to artistry, such as Zachary Mason and his work.
