This March begins with a journey back IN TIME under Sam Slatcher’s guidance. The JOURNEY IS titled “Set The World on Track” and dives into the lives of OFTEN-FORGOTTEN pioneers in Shildon, who created the first passenger railway. This first line connecting two little TOWNS ended up reshaping the surroundings, and soon, the whole world.

We land in Shildon sometime in the 19th century, where Shildon Wagon Works operated until its closure in 1980s. Before that year, it was busy with life, as the song tells about generations of blacksmiths working in the company creating something new. It’s surrounded by warm acoustic folk sound, where the melodies fill the air with notes of excitement and pride for doing the important job. How important it ended up being, though, they didn’t yet know.
The single arrives as the third and final from a trio of railroad-themed songs, announcing the arrival of an upcoming full-length album “Passengers & Pioneers”. The album, arriving on March 14th, is a collection of songs telling stories about the passengers and pioneers of the oldest railroad in the world, the little stretch of line between two North East towns.
The release was created as a culmination of a “Storylines” project for Bishop Line Community Rail Partnership, where Sam Slatcher was among the artists traveling the line from Bishop Auckland to Saltburn, collecting stories from passengers to turn them into art. There are also bits from the archive of the first passenger railway journey of 1825 on the Stockton & Darlington Railway.

Sam Slatcher, a singer-songwriter and community arts facilitator, is passionate about telling stories through music, as well as working in a community. When he isn’t writing songs or traveling through North East in search of stories, Sam organizes workshops across North East with Citizen Songwriters, to help people write music about things and locations dear to them.
