myah is a Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter who’s gathering some traction to her songs thanks to the success of her single “The Lobby” last October. The artist is now back with IS THIS WHAT I SEE?, her first proper collection of tracks into an 8-track EP. myah’s first release of the year features a few of her previously-known singles like “notice you” and “flames”, but mostly it impresses with new material and a new perspective.

The soundscape explored by myah on her proper debut EP blends delicious bedroom pop aesthetics with influences from 2010s synthpop, topped with delicate existentialist lyricism.
On IS THIS WHAT I SEE? myah was inspired by films such as Titanic and Twilight as well as some of her favourite music – Talking Heads’s “This Must Be the Place” is explicitly referenced on opener “with you”. The track kicks things off with beautiful, dreamy melodies and sets the tone very nicely on what waits for us in these eight songs: relationships, internal thoughts and a lot of self-reflection on love and the passage of time.
IS THIS WHAT I SEE? is an EP filled with complex melodies and rich textures, marrying synthlines with organic instruments that give it an alternative rock feel. Chanelling names like Squirrel Flower and Hazel English, myah’s songs are very dynamic and lean towards introspective realisations and bring forth honest musings that are catchy like bubblegum pop and hit with cinematic soundscapes that feel like soundtracks to personal daydreams.

“I miss the memories of the past a lot, and I often wonder what life would be like if it moved a little slower. This EP is my way of capturing those feelings”, the artist herself comments on the EP’s inspirations.
The Los Angeles-based songstress writes with incredible vulnerability and manages to make songs that feel and sound inviting, backed with intricate atmospheres and dreamy pacing filled with nods to films and other people’s music. On stand out track “summer love”, myah creates her own version of an underground dance hit with uplifting melodies and carefully curated sounds. It’s a light and airy track about newfound love that weaves in references to Taylor Swift’s “I Know Places” at the same time that carves its own crystalline path.
On her debut EP, myah does a great job in looking inwards as she explores her own inner thoughts. It’s a very intimate record for sure as it lets us in and shows myah’s songwriting has only gotten better with time, sounding more mature and reflecting personal and artistic growth with ease. This EP impresses with versatility and range, navigating through such landscapes with imaginative wonder.
More importantly, IS THIS WHAT I SEE? stands as an invitation to romantic and dreamy otherworldly atmospheres that are rooted in uncertainty and imagination, serving as a certain companion piece to myah’s upcoming full-length debut. As the artist herself told us, the songs from her album are more based on reality and this EP goes for the ethereal route. “My music is for people who feel things deeply, who overthink, who romanticize small moments even when they hurt. It blends alternative and indie sounds with an emotional, cinematic core”, she concludes.
