American bubblegum grunge quartet The Sleepy Haunts just returned with brand new album BLOOM, expanding upon the ideas and themes from their previous Bloom, Vol 1 EP from 2023. On their new album the Seattle-based indie act shines with a confidence never heard from them before, making their pop-infused indie rock both heavier and sweeter with distorted guitars and sugary melodies.
Led by singer and songwriter Gillian McMahon, the soundscape explored by The Sleepy Haunts on their new records stretches itself across influences from names like Pearl Jam and Alanis Morissette, as well as Charly Bliss and Olivia Rodrigo. Their brand of indie rock is an absolute delight, going hard when needed but never shying away from diving deep into vulnerability when required. On BLOOM, the band does a remarkable job in keeping their high levels of energy and bringing their influences and inspirations into new heights of dynamism and drama.
Perfectly exploring a Swiftian storytelling style of creating narratives that are incredibly personal and making them feel universally relatable, BLOOM shows a band that is more ready than ever to cement their place in the indie rock music scene. The music navigated by The Sleepy Haunts on their new album is explosive at the same time that their lyricism feels more mature than before, going for themes that deal with struggles that come with getting older and having more responsibilities, like on stand out track “twenty”.

Across its twelve tracks and forty minutes, BLOOM impresses with sonic cohesion and a light-hearted production that builds itself beautifully and feels as diversely scattared as the youthful feelings they are singing about. In fact, the band worked with Aaron Cada whose previous credits include earlier materiam from Beach Bunny – including mastering their breakout track “Prom Queen”. It’s a perfect fit for Sleepy Haunts, who showcases a wide range of sounds and versatility on their new album knowing exactly how and when to slow things down like on the acoustic ballad “give me a chance”.
BLOOM is a cinematic record that always conveys the exact amount of drama needed, be it on the atmospheric “opportunity” with its slide-guitar or the adventurous single “bloodsucker”. The way The Sleepy Haunts manages to incorporate and explore so many different genres and styles while still remaining absolutely true to their own aesthetic is quite impressive, given that this is only their proper debut album. The growth and maturity shown by the Seattle quartet makes it a remarkable collection of tracks, one that cements The Sleepy Haunts as a promise within the current music scene.
BLOOM is an album that feels astonishingly real, unveiling itself as a certain ode to young adulthood – as the band themselves put it. As they say, the record deals with “those feelings of being on your own and trying to navigate what it means to be independent” and does it with action-packed riffs, sincere lyricism and a never-stopping fun energy that is as compelling as it is nostalgic. The Sleepy Haunts are on a thrilling ride right now and it’s an absolute joy to follow along.
