All the way from Seattle, The Sleepy Haunts is a young band leaded by singer Gillian McMahon. She is joined by guitarist Josiah Massari, drummer Sevastian Dingler, and bassist Noah Wager. Together they help materialize McMahon’s thoughts and vision, resulting in songs with similar vibes to Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift.
bloom, Vol.1 is a four-track collection of intimate songs about Gillian’s personal thoughts and insecurities. It’s an open book into her life and a look-see into her dreams and fears. At times uplifting, at times nostalgic, the EP is really a 360º range of feelings; from soft chords to punk-rock like riffs.
Opening up with “why do i feel this way?”, we are presented with a 00’s Pop Rock vibes track about envy within the music industry. “It’s the feeling of seeing someone else succeeding and wondering why that can’t be you. It’s also about resenting that jealousy and wanting to overcome it.“, Gillian explains.
“bloom, vol. 1” is just one part of what will be a full album (titled “BLOOM”) that is fully written by us and produced by Aaron Cada (previous work with Beach Bunny). Each of the four tracks represents a milestone in my life. “why do I feel this way” is about the jealousy often felt in the music industry, “standing, waiting” about feeling separate from ones own life, “peter parker” about first loves, and “the end” about current world events.

Second track, “standing, waiting” is a more acoustic and mellow offering for the Jo March burned-out oldest daughters who feel like the whole world is on their shoulders with no one to carry the burden. Next, we have “Peter Parker”, a track inspired by Spiderman’s true identity, and dedicated to Gillian’s boyfriend. This one comes with a much more Punk Rock attitude in a great girly fashion.
The EP closes up with the most emotional and nostalgic song, “the end (morning after)”. Written after the overturning of Roe V. Wade, this final chapter of the EP presents the upmost sensibility. Starting as an acoustic track, it develops into a wide full beat, supported by high-reaching synths and even pitched-vocals, and samples that could be found in a emo trap beat.
This one is said to have made the audience cry at The Sleepy Haunts’ acoustic show, so, you know they made something right. In a nutshell, the EP is a beautiful musical performance that tries to salvage the artist’s broken thoughts, hoping to heal them through music while also sending a shade of light for anyone who needs it.
