Indoor Friends bring escapism to distract from the gloom, releases new single “Psyayayduck”

Life is crude and full of problems. What isn’t full of problems is videogames. Indoor Friends emerge after a 2-year hiatus and bring with them a new single “Psyayayduck”, a punk pop song about trying to survive in this persistent gloom through humor and the distraction offered by videogames.

“My therapist thinks I’m talented,” a line from the lead singer’s Notes app, became the foundation of what has become an expression of escapism through a lens of humor. Lyric-wise, it’s a story told by a young person struggling with depression, and the things they experience in their daily life. When faced with friends also coping with their set of issues and sending countless memes, a doctor upping a dose instead of trying other meds, and the supposedly optimism-bringing sayings, and “Psyayayduck” immediately makes the charm of video game escapism understandable.

Matching with the rest of the lyrics venting the frustration, the song’s title comes from the sound of annoyance made by a pokemon named Psyduck. In the song’s bridge, the synths carry reverb matching that present in old SNES games, to incorporate more of this fuzzy video game feel. In this world, where your only concern is healing your Pokémon or not crashing, the daily troubles are left behind a closed door, even if only for the evening.

For live music fans, Indoor Friends have also recorded a live version of the single, recorded in Gart Studios:

Last time Indoor Friends were on the blog, they had just released an EP titled “Is It All Melting?“. The punk rock release was earnest and, as described by the band, full of depressive songs. For “Psyayayduck” they steered away from the depressive tone and found a balance between humor and catchiness. Inspired by the sound of 90s and 2000s alt rock that the band members grew up with, Indoor Friends create full-bodied captivating music that won’t pretend life isn’t an occasionally intolerable hell. What they will say, though, is that you are not alone in this mess.
