Singapore-based singer, songwriter, and producer Ethan Loke RETURNS with “You’ll Be Fine”, the FOLLOW-UP single to his Normal EP from last October. Drawing inspirations from modern indie folk acts such as Noah Kahan and Lizzy McAlpine, Ethan delivers an elegant track on the struggles of mental health with thoughtfulness and rooted in a hopeful message.
The intimate tune offers an unique perspective on this delicate subject, written from the point of view of someone who’s already gone through it but came out victorious on the other side. Sharing his insights and inner fights with selflessness, “You’ll Be Fine” is a track that stands as a journey of resilience and reassurance that strikes emotional chords with anyone who’s suffered from such issues or loves someone who does.
“You’ll Be Fine” highlights the importance of communication and therapy, taking inspiration from one of Ethan’s own darkest moments: a suicide attempt that was prevented by a gathering of his friends that, thankfully, resulted in a change of his plans. Ethan writes from a real and vulnerable place of exposition, recalling his past experiences and struggles from the triumphant position of someone who’s overcame the worst of it.

Having gone through mental issues in his teenage years, Ethan writes music that isn’t afraid to deal with its hardships head on. There is a softness to his production style and storytelling, like someone who’s patiently shining his own light onto what has happened in the past in order to prevent it from becoming someone else’s future. “You’ll Be Fine” is a song that respects the feelings of bleakness and validates them at the same time that illustrates how things can actually change for the better, providing a place of comfort and hope to those who haven’t gotten there yet.
“Truly, the song serves as a reminder that even despite how bleak life may seem at times, there’s always a way back into the light. With uplifting and hopeful lyrics such as “They say the worst tragedies are the words you’ll never share” or “Your wings have potential, they’ve just yet to be trained”, Ethan shares his experience of his journey of finding hope with the world.”
It’s a powerful track of healing and self-reflection, a gentle reminder that even the darkest dark will eventually pass. Borrowing the aesthetics of Phoebe Bridgers’s Punisher, “You’ll Be Fine” comes with a lovely lyric video shows a somewhat cheerful animation against starry skies and mountain landscapes, doing a wonderful job in highlighting its hopeful and understanding lyricism. “You’ll Be Fine” offers the same emotional relief as a hug from a loved one, having the ability to make time stop for a few moments and allows you to reevaluate the feelings of uneasiness and discomfort from a place of love and trust.
Entirely self-written, recorded, produced and mixed by Ethan himself, “You’ll Be Fine” is a testament of the artist’s maturity and growth. It’s a track that offers compassion through times of difficulty and does so by focusing on a very simple thought, but it’s the one that slips away most easily: it’ll pass, and there is always people to reach out for help until it does.
