Italian alternative pop songstress Francesca Pichierri just released her brand-new single “Amen”, an upbeat and infeccious track that deals with how illness reshapes relationships. Over thumping beats and taking many creative risks, Francesca creates a nu-disco song that basks in its own momentum sounding, unlike anything she’s ever put out until now.
Francesca leaves behind the piano-based soundscapes she’s explored in previous tracks and goes the full-blown-out pop route, adding many different elements and influences from across multiple genres. “Amen” stands as the latest installment taken from her upcoming album Cellule Stronze, heavily inspired by her own mother’s battle against cancer, and showcases the Apulia-based artist experimenting with a myriad of sights and sounds.
“Amen” seems to run free over its 70s disco production, dabbling also with psychedelia, funk and Brazilian music with a 90s dance flare. It’s a fast-paced and breath-taking track, made up of crisp melodies and dynamic changes that result in a beautifully chaotic atmosphere. Backed by synths and groovy bass lines, Francesca’s vocals are the real star of the project as they serve both as an anchor as well as the wind that sets “Amen” sailing.
Cellule Stronze is gearing up to be an intricately constructed concept album surrounding grief and disease but, most importantly, how we as a society deal with such topics. On her previous single “Speraci Due Eroi” Francesca celebrates the love of those who stay to fight alongside during adversity over gentle pianos and operatic cadences; while “Amen” follows the other side of the story and turns its frustration towards the people who leave at the first sign of trouble. It’s fascinating to listen to both tracks back-to-back, as they couldn’t be or feel more different.

Francesca is a highly eclectic songwriter, managing to give herself fully to whatever production choices lie ahead. “Amen” is an extroverted exploration of the ultimate contradiction and hypocrisy of expressing sympathy but choosing to retreat in the face of illness. Disguised as a danceable track filled with interesting twists and urgent instrumentation, “Amen” unveils as a song that navigates through the discomfort that surrounds those who battle cancer, turning into a critique of human behavior with cold precision.
The narrative that Francesca has been building up in the path towards her full-length debut reveals itself as a nuanced and thrilling one. She is fearless in her criticism of the action of walking away, at the same time that shows true empathy and yearning for those suffering from the illness. The juxtaposition is jarring and contributes to a meaningful conversation on the impact that the disruption of health causes in relationships. “Amen” is a colourful picture of the worst case scenario, a track that conquers the listener with uplifting melodies and experimental production at the same time that stands its ground as a perseverence anthem. Those who choose to leave, we don’t need them anyway.
