In late 2024, Connecticut-based act Delta of Venus released a stunning double single as their debut. “Disengaged” and “Slipping” were the tracks, a generous offer that highlighted their composition style and showed off an incredible range in sound and motion. Now the Ellery Twining-fronted trio start their new year with a gorgeous short film that features both tracks, turning them into a cohesive narrative.

Filmed over almost three months and directed by Mystic photographer Michelle Gemma, the short film is a fantastic retelling of the Joan of Arc myth grounded in reality. The eight-minute film offers an insightful glimpse into the songs’ thematic, capturing the best use of the dream pop atmospheres crafted by Delta of Venus, as it follows the central character in an imagined life she never got to live.

Beautifully shot with sensibility and intimacy, the short film gives Joan of Arc a compelling narrative that sees what could have happened had she not died at nineteen. In this alternative universe, Joan now leads a movement of female resistance set in contemporary times. It’s a fascinating concept, executed to perfection by writer/director Gemma and editor James Canty.

Capturing the holy rebellious spirit of Joan of Arc, the film brings the eerie shoegaze-infused indie pop of the band to life. Employing thoughtful symbolism and classic references, Gemma recontextualizes the myth as a lively and down-to-Earth story of defiance as told through deeply feminist lenses – as such narrative should.

As the dreamy “Disengaged” segues into the groovy “Slipping” with its thrilling bass lines, the film shifts as well and the girls take action. Equiped with fencing masks, we see them in small but meaningful acts of rebellion like burning photos and spray-painting the words ‘I AM NO MAN’. The video manages to portray those intricate and complex moments with an underlying tone of introspection that makes it extremely realistic and relatable, much like the songs themselves.

The songs were already breath-taking in their dimming beauty, and now feel even more alive than ever. The first music video from Delta of Venus serves as a manifest of their ethos in a delicate but firm and confident manner. A palpable and honest look into Delta of Venus’s modus operandi, the short film also stands on its own merit through Michelle Gamma’s delicate direction and creative reasoning. A good music video is one that portrays the song’s emotional intent through visual entertainment, and in this case it goes even beyond that as a true work of art with remarkable storytelling.
