“Welcome to the Joy and the Wildfire fam. If it’s your first time listening to us, you’re going to get genre-defying indie rock. I like to say our genre is “full-out”. We’re not afraid of a gesture. If we’re going to go there, we’re going to really go there. And I think that’s what sets us apart. In our albums and live shows, I want to embody the size of the songs, embody the size of the emotions and embody the ambition of the project. In doing so, I hope you all feel inspired to embody your truth as well.” Samantha Joy Pearlman

Aftershocks is an album that has only one goal: to capture your attention. And it does beautifully by shifting between elements of nu-metal, new wave, and an honest-to-God punk attitude. The group grew out of Samantha’s solo project and was inspired by the undeniable synergy between her and the musicians Meghan Doyle on guitars and twins Jared and Sean Decker on drums and bass, respectively. With the band officially formed, Samantha is ready to spin the alternative rock world on its axis.

On their debut album, Joy and the Wildfire mash together ambiances from several distinct places and somehow make it work as a cohesive record that steers in different directions, but always with one single objective. Taking in a myriad of influences with the ease of a baker who’s read a recipe and changed it because they know better, Samantha and her crew prove that they are smart enough to lean on those inspirations without ever fully giving into them – and it’s a thrilling experience to listen to.

“The band started as the band for my solo project. Andrew, the keyboardist/producer/co-writer of the record, and I made a pact that every show we would play we would write a new song for it. Before we knew it, we had a whole batch of new music that felt different from my solo project. The music felt bigger, more dramatic and surprisingly with lots of imagery about natural disasters. So “Joy and the Wildfire” was born”. Samantha Joy Pearlman

Samantha constantly proves to be a noteworthy songwriter by knowing the exact mood that would fit her lyrics – it doesn’t matter if it comes from jazz and bossa nova or nu-metal and new wave. Aftershocks stands as a ride through wild mood swings that ultimately come together with the charming qualities of an old friend who you’ve been missing. Samantha also does an amazing job in emulating the energy of legendary frontwomen such as Debbie Harry and Chrissie Hynde with charm and eloquency, bringing a certain nostalgic element to the Wildfire’s music.

“The album “Aftershocks” is about a few relationships of mine, some romantic, some platonic— even the relationship with myself, that changed when I finally accepted the old version of me didn’t exist anymore. The album also explores themes of mental illness. Many people close to me struggle with mental illness and I wanted to make music about the experience of loving people around you who suffer in ways beyond mainstream understanding.” Samantha Joy Pearlman

“Many of the songs are about the tumultuous friendship Andrew and I had. We would fight and then write songs about that. I look back at my younger self and want to hug her as she thought that was a tenable arrangement. We started to become addicted to fighting and I wanted to write about other things. It became unmanageable. While he is no longer in the band, I truly wish him nothing but the best. Our debut record captures the naivety of a band finding its footing and I’m so proud of what we all made collectively.” Samantha Joy Pearlman

Their power pop core shines through all of the different sonic influences, making Aftershocks an album that feels and sounds like a meeting with an old friend who’s changed a lot since you last saw each other. Going from the stadium-sized anthem that is the title track and opener “Aftershocks” to the slow, simmering ballad “Consequence of Time” all the way to the new wave bop “Misunderstood”, the debut album from Joy and the Wildfire is a rare collection of precious gemstones that blend cohesion with experimentation to create something unique, different, and ever-so-excitingly fearless.
