Her latest solo effort is a moody and sultry track that rivals Beth Gibbon’s delivery on the best parts of Dummy, while retaining River’s own charm and personality. The song leans heavily on its sensual side, providing an intoxicating atmosphere that explores love, passion, and obsession, surrendering with no chance of escape – not that we would want to anyway. On “Put Down for Love” River sounds mesmerizing, carefully enunciating her words as if milking them to their last drop, then moving on as if commanded by an entity that is just passing by unbeknownst to her surroundings.
a mark,” says Toussaint. “It’s seductive, a little dangerous, and completely immersive.”
River carved on her new single a song about the waiting, a track that is adventurous and tintilating but that takes its time before swallowing you whole. The way the artist perfectly balances the hypnotic and alluring situation with the feelings of the danger that may ensue is magnetic, making “Put Down for Love” a song that creeps in slowly like a lovecraftian being: it’s there patiently awaiting for its moment while having effects beyond comprehension on those around it. It’s an exhilarating experience of sensuality and power, a track that constantly pushes things just a little bit further and further until you can’t help but give in for good.
“Put Down for Love” is equally haunting and enthralling in its appeal, portraying lustful and vivid imagery with elegant confidence. River shows off her ability of sounding self-reflective and introspective in a song about giving in to seduction fully, like if illustrating the moments of world-stopping anticipation when you’re already well aware that there is no turning back. And in a climactic and fascinating turn, distorted guitars kick in and the production builds every single sound towards the heavens – it’s finally happened, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
