Mark Neal debuts with a complex dive into human emotions on “Cool Waters”

Scottish folk singer and songwriter Mark Neal released his debut album Cool Waters in late 2024 AND continues to promote it way into this year. And by listening to the ALBUM, it’s very easy to understand why the artist is still talking about this album instead of getting ready for another BRAND-NEW single or EP to keep momentum: Cool Waters is just too good to move on from so easily.

Cool Waters is the amalgamation of over twenty years of being a musician in bands and touring. It’s an intimate look at a whole life, basking in every joy and mourning every sorrow. The Helensburgh-based artist delivers a striking record, filled with excellent influences that feel rooted in country music while reaching out towards soul and R&B. Cool Waters is a stunning experience; it’s an album that overflows with inspiration and excitement as it recalls hopeful passages and tragic endings with the same serenity and respect.

The exhilarating instrumental composition “The Short Light of Winter” marks the halfway point of the record, a pivotal moment that allows you to reflect and understand everything Mark’s been telling you up until now. The first half of the album shows a songwriter reminiscing about times long gone, yearning for a nostalgic past that is no more and could never return, like sung on “Be There”. Mark finds beauty in those moments as if singing about small revelations that spark curiosity and a genuine, naive interest. It is also the home of “More Than You Can See”, the most heartfelt love song I’ve heard in years.

“The songs are a reflection of how I feel about many things in life; art, love, the environment, and most of all music.” Mark Neal

The latter half shows Mark driving through a little more experimental route, even if still tied to his classical musings. There are elements of American country rock on “Fire Burns on Water” and traditional sounds coming from Scottish folk music on “Don’t Stop”, exploring a wide range of influences. Mark navigates through everything beautifully and with utmost competence, weaving melodies that relish in sweetness and feel comforting. Cool Waters is an invitation to an entire life story, going through many moods over time.

“I had some songs that I’d be writing often inspired by the scenery and environment around the west coast of Scotland, but these songs didn’t really fit in with the bands I playing in so I decided to start recording them and that inspired me to write some more and I ended up with a full album of music, with all the instruments played by myself and also recorded and mixed by myself.” Mark Neal

There is a softness in Mark’s vocals that is heartbraking even in moments of joy, adding so much emotional depth to the poetic lyricism and intricate compositions. The debut album from Mark Neal captures humanness making it feel easy, elegant and graceful. It’s a remarkable accomplishment, cementing his name once and for all amongst the contemporary greats. Finally debuting under his own name, the scotsman created a transcendental work that finds its strength in relatability and common ground.
