Ever since first appearing with debut single “Bubblegum Pop” last May, New Zealand-based musician Shaun Dayman has been very active and proving himself as an extremely prolific songwriter with his project DayEyez. His latest single “Cast Away” shows the artist crafting an alternative rock track that feels otherworldly, incorporating elements from early 2000s nu-metal and a compelling indie pop sensibility.

The music curated by DayEyez borrows influences and inspirations from a wide variety of genres and scenes, ranging from midwest emo to however you’d classify Imagine Dragons. The singer and songwriter from Richmond does a great job in melding together different styles and feelings into songs that defy most of our expectations but feel predictable and comforting in the best of ways at the same time.
Produced with the assistance of AI, DayEyez travels through a soundscape in ethereal pursuit of the majestic and the magical but always relying on real human emotions. “Cast Away” does a great job in pacing its punch and unravelling over soaring production, allowing room for the storytelling to raise its stakes very organically. Dealing with the anxiety and isolation that comes after knowing that you were the one who damaged the relationship, the track hits you with emotional weight and no sense of resolution.
Backed by a dramatic lyric video that shows images of agitated oceans and thunderstorms, “Cast Away”, however, manages the push and pull between those feelings and a newfound sense of self-reflection as a way of preventing it to repeat. The images of airplanes and lighthouses on the video being representative of that fleeting sense of rescue and hope for your situation, making the track hit you even harder.
And Shaun delivers that message with intimacy and vulnerability, making it a journey towards understanding that feels unique and relatable. Its production, also done by the artist himself, offers a fresh perspective on the epic 2000s sound made by Thirty Seconds to Mars and Linkin Park diving deep into its grandioseness never looking back.

DayEyez is a very intriguing musician, proving himself to be an inventive producer who knows how to best use AI to his advantage without it taking away any of the emotion. He manages to navigate through futuristic landscapes and create a cinematic memory with ease, making tracks that feel seamlessly dynamic. It’s incredibly exciting to think of what he’ll do next, and I can’t wait for more.
