Harry Kappen’s new album “Four” is an exploration of human connections and its complex consequences

Dutch musician, multi-instrumentalist and music therapist Harry Kappen is back with brand new album Four, following the success of last year’s Time Will Tell and its highlight “Where the Volcano Is Awake“. His latest effort shows the artist leaning more heavily on the classic rock side of his influences, citing names like Prince, Bowie and McCartney as main inspirations. The result is a solid record that explores the boundless possibilities of the modern rock sound, while still honoring what came before and using it as a blueprint of sorts.

Four takes those inspirations and runs with them, adding along healthy doses of americana and indie pop. It’s remarkable how his new album feels like a direct continuation of Time Will Tell and something entirely new at once, giving Kappen’s career a newfound life. It opens with the excellent “The Longing”, a track that showcases the Baarn-based artist channeling his inner David Bowie, featuring 70s rock references and dramatic, even menacing strings. The atmosphere is one of fascination and reverence, setting the tone of the record perfectly.

Kappen deals with complex themes, such as politics and the perennial struggle between Good and Evil, addressing issues like lies and the absence of respect and values in modern society. It’s a record that manages to explore those larger-than-life struggles through utterly human lenses, point out those conflicts in an existentialist manner, and try to shine a light on how true human connection is slowly slipping through our fingers. Four measures no words in getting its point across, finding a much-needed balance between bleak pessimism and hopeful yearning for a better future.

Backed by the gorgeous singles “Courage” and “Break These Chains”, Harry Kappen manages to create a record that captures those internal and external struggles with the dignity of a bystander narrator. He is merely laying out the consequences that directly come from human interaction, especially how weary it can feel when there is none. Four succeeds in tackling such heavy topics head-on, but always with a certain optimism shyly woven throughout. At its core, it’s a record of the vital human connections and their significance. Kappen sings about love and memory, desire and courage with a relentless spirit and an impressive production.

His melodies find their footing amongst the swirling strings, synths, and the coziness of the acoustic guitar with an adventurous sense of experimental wonder. The comforting ambiance navigated by Kappen unravels as his biggest strength, finding room for joy and hope through the dire times. Four stands as a mindful record and a string of masterfully put together stories, both dramatic and buoyant, taking us through a journey of mind and soul that is expertly illustrated on the lavish “The Choices We’ve Made”.

The latest record from Harry Kappen stands as his most interesting to date, providing a rich and lush atmosphere that truly emphasizes the importance of organic connections. The world may be a messy place at these current times, but there is still positivity to be found and spread. Love and empathy are what make us human, and at the end of the day, that’s still what we are even when things seem difficult and weary.
