Milyssa Rose offers a gloomy perspective of doomsday proportions on new album “The Collection 2”

Atlanta-based singer and songwriter Milyssa Rose is back with The Collection 2, the follow up to her album The Collection from last year. Milyssa has been an active presence in the independent music scene since 2010, with several EPs, singles and albums under her belt. On her latest effort, her industrial-infused alternative rock musings are even more compelling with intricate experimental melodies and big distorted guitars.

The Collection 2 is an interesting project featuring a brand new take on her diverse musical influences, including remastered versions of earlier tracks “Olly” and “Lost at the Seams”. The record rummages through epic productions and incorporates them into its own fabric, kind of like a collage of inspirations that add depth and humanity to her ever-evolving sound.

“My music is a collection of music genres I listened to while growing up. I have a wide variety of tastes”, Milyssa says on the record. Her approach to those influences reveals itself in alluring ways that always remain true to her personal beliefs and motifs. “People used to tell me to pick a lane. I refuse. I like to express myself in different styles because every day our moods change, etc. Why can’t my style change with that, too?”, she ultimately concludes.

The latest release taken from the album is the shining new single “Take Your Last Breath”, a track that soars with hard-hitting beats and raw emotionality. Tackling on issues of mental health, the track offers a PJ Harvey-inspired vocal delivery that slithers its way across grunge guitars and haunting synths with purposeful determination. The track’s bleakness is made even clearer on the stunning music video that accompanies it, showing Milyssa performing over eerie imagery of fires, goats, dark forests and all-white walls.

“Take Your Last Breath” is an astonishing example of how somber her music can be, leaning into to hopelessness and despair as it gets more intense by the second. It’s a gloomy song that takes its title to heart, crafting unsettling atmospheres that swirl around with no real place to go, as uncanny as they are beautiful.

Her latest full-length shows Milyssa diving into introspection and self-reflection, with a pessimistic lyricism that feels utterly realistic and earth-shattering. It stands as a vivid exploration of the darkest corners of the human mind, providing insight to the situations at hand with no real way out of them. The Collection 2 also feels tangible and human at its very core, highlighting Milyssa Rose’s vulnerability and personal struggles in its lyrical approach with a fascinating balance of intimacy and restraint.

The artist relies on distortion to express her feelings, but always goes for the unlikely and experimental route. On tracks like “The No Chorus Opera”, we get glimpses of actual operatic vocals amongst the chaotic guitars, and on “Without Cause”, the sorrow comes in the form of foreboding doom metal ambiences intertwined with alien synths and end-of-the-world seriousness. It’s a record with topics heavier than its guitars, carving its way through a myriad of different sounds and styles as if trying out new accessories to decide what feels better.

Milyssa Rose rises from the debris as its own prophet, creating an album that is spellbinding to its extreme. She navigates through her influences and experiences with the graceful smirk of knowing she’s the one who caused all of the destruction. Across its short run, Milyssa does an excellent job of leaning into her darkness, trying to make sense of it, proving that cathartic beauty and peace can be found even amongst the wreckage.
