Icelandic singer and songwriter Sjana Rut has been making a name for herself since her first singles back in 2016, and she has already released acclaimed albums and EPs in this meantime. Her latest effort is the dancefloor-ready pop banger “Game Over”, a track that channels references from 80s gaming culture as well as infeccious synthpop beats.

“Game Over” is a smart song that lets loose all of Sjana’s creative and personal storytelling, using video game slang to break out of an abusive relationship. Inspired by her experiences, the track offers a slick and modern production that fuses EDM dynamics with sensible lyrics that seek to regain control of the situation. Sjana does an excellent job in keeping things light, fun and danceable in spite of the song’s dark subject matter.
Throughout the artist’s career she’s navigated many different soundscapes while writing in both icelandic and english, but she’s never been this electrifying before. “Game Over” stands with perfectly crafted pop hooks and electronic-heavy production, showing a brand new side of her artistry that feels exhilarating and empowering. Sjana establishes herself within the same realm of elegant and chic synthpop made by the likes of Róisín Murphy and Kylie Minogue, offering a fresh perspective and reclaiming her own power.
“Storytelling is at the heart of everything I do — whether through music, visuals, or lyrics. My art is like my diary, where I express thoughts and emotions I can’t always share in daily life. I don’t write to fit a genre. I write to tell the truth. So while you may never know exactly what to expect from me sound-wise, you can always expect it to be real, emotional, and intentional.” Sjana Rut

But it’s not all fun and games, as “Game Over” unravels as an intimate exploration of the aftermath of a long overdue breakup. It’s a track that speaks on recognizing the manipulation she’s been through and walking away with her head held high, moving on and using pop music as a cathartic breakthrough. “The idea of ‘Game Over’ came to me after leaving an abusive relationship”, the artist herself comments on the track before ultimately concluding: “The video game symbolizes the controlling environment and by pushing yourself to level up it becomes a celebration of survival”.
The song is inspired by the musical soundscape of the games I grew up with, so the metaphor of a video game came to me naturally. There’s something empowering about the idea of “leveling up.” In a controlling relationship, it often feels like you’re stuck playing someone else’s game — like they’re holding the controller. Game Over flips that script. It’s about unplugging, walking away, and saying: “I’m done. I’m out.” Sjana Rut
It’s adventurous and corageous, showing an artist ready to fully embrace new sounds and possibilities without ever deserting her thoughtful songwriting. “Game Over” shines with impeccable balance between vulnerability and recognition of the past while looking straight ahead for the future with unwavering strength. A song with incredible meaning behind it, “Game Over” continues Sjana’s foray into the electropop genre with graceful dignity and cements her as a force to be reckoned with in the modern pop landscape.
“If you’re just discovering my music, I hope Game Over gives you strength — or simply a reason to dance!” Sjana Rut
