Singer and songwriter Ariyel, from Loveland, Colorado, released her brand-new single “How to Be Loved”. The track marks her first release since 2023’s “Over It” and shows the artist at her most fragile and vulnerable. Her sound stands as an exploration of a boundless landscape, filled with rich twists and turns that make her alternative pop shine through with a range of excellent references.

“If you have never listened to my music before, expect visual and visceral lyrics about love, trauma and mental health, a lot of harmonies and sweeping vocals, and a focus on story in every song. I’ve been writing for 14 years now, and my hope is to write music that makes people feel seen and less alone. I hope my music can bring just a little of that to you”. Ariyel
Taking cues from modern indie classics like Phoebe Bridgers and Mitski, Ariyel, an American songwriter, creates music that fits somewhere between a dreamland and the devastation of reality with heartfelt lyricism and impeccable taste. “How to Be Loved” is a breathtaking experience, highlighted by the emotions that sprout from every one of her words. Her new single is a song about the sentimental implications of loving someone who harms you, coming from an incredibly vulnerable place of understanding.
Like a therapy session in progress, “How to Be Loved” grows emotionally and sonically, revealing itself as an intimate and delicate portrayal of failed human connections. ‘You don’t know how to be loved, and I don’t know how to remind you‘, she sings on a bleak chorus that somehow still feels satisfying even in spite of the darkness that surrounds it.
Ariyel builds upon these atmospheres with growing intensity, fully navigating through the tension and unease of trying to find her ground on this dynamic only to figure out that she can’t – evoking the same feeling that was explored by Taylor Swift on her “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” from The Tortured Poets Department.

“I wrote this song when I was 19 years old, and I have spent 6 years getting it produced– I am so happy to finally release it. Lyrically this has been a favorite of mine for a long time and I hope that this song can be of comfort to anyone who has been through a rough romantic relationship.” Ariyel
“How to Be Loved” is one hell of a comeback for the singer, opening up new sonic paths as well as going deeper than ever before in previous influences. A track that deals with narcissism, pain and trauma, eventually leading up to an introspective reflection of the self and how she reacts to everything. What started as a prompt in songwriting class has turned into a cathartic emotional journey of self-realization and the emotional aftermath of an abusive relationship.
“It’s a love letter to the people we were, and the decisions we made when we already knew we were doomed. You leave when you’re ready. And you are just as much of a person when you’re trapped in that cycle as you are when you’re healing outside of it — and finally beginning to understand why you stayed“, she wisely concludes by the end of the ordeal.
Needless to say, it ultimately comes to a staggering conclusion of not being able to do much for this person. “How to Be Loved” offers a fascinating perspective on that matter, following the trajectory of someone who desperately wants things to be okay but comes to accept that there is nothing to be done. It’s a dense realization that comes like a punch to the stomach, as all of the emotions seem to fall into their place and none of it is where the artist would ideally like them to be. And yet, she puts on a brave face and carries on because there is nothing else to do – and she’ll rise stronger over it.
