On May 18th, Ivelisse del Carmen dropped her newest single ahead for the upcoming summer of love, titled “An Ocean in Between”. Within the summery airy song that’s feeling very alive, a story of two hearts unravels with all the anticipation, flirting and uncertainty, everything that two lovers with distance between them endure on their common path of romance.
While any distance feels like way too much for two hearts in love with one another, an ocean is a truly feared separator. Ivelisse del Carmen does not give up though, and focuses on the brighter side of this experience, particularly the flurry of emotions that come with reunion.
Like a proper dreamy summertime song of romance, the single opens up with elevated moods described by gently swirling melodies and a popping soft percussion. A state of near weightlessness is achieved immediately. The charming vocals are equally as elevated, as they describe the ebbs and flows of ongoing love, from the parting (taking pieces of her with him) to the anxious excitement of reunion, as well as the impact the special person has on her life.
With lyrics as clear as a lagoon, and the exhilarating dose of joy present in all parts of the track, “An Ocean in Between” is a celebration of love. Despite the overall happy moods, there’s also the longing and inherent sadness of being on your own again, with the person so far away. The song sometimes questions if this love can really work with that distance, or is it a blessing in disguise when each reunion becomes a really special event.
The song’s music video with equally whimsical and overall happy mood follows the story told within the lyrics, where clips of happy reunion alternate with moments spent alone, the phone being the only method of connection. Those moments, where doubt starts to sprout, are washed over by the general sense of excitement, both from love and the unknown tomorrow. Check out the video below:
Ivelisse del Carmen hails from London, where the Puerto Rican native artist weaves together inspirations from the modern productions, her classical training, and genres from Spain and Latin America, like bolero and bossa nova. There’s a sheen of lively seduction present in her creations, as if the songs are all creatures full of life energy and willing to share it with everybody. “An Ocean in Between” will share the joy of love, no matter what boundaries are building up in-between.
