Erotika Dabra delivers a vulnerable message of strength and resilience on their “I Wonder (for Us)” experimental project

Australian visual artist, dancer and producer Erotika Dabra just released the final part of their I Wonder project, a twisted electronic spoken word track titled “I Wonder (for Me)”. It’s an intense track filled with conflicting textures and urgent arpeggiated melodies that create both a sense of intimacy as well as an exploration of the vastness that surrounds them.

Sonically “I Wonder (for Me)” builds upon exactly where “I Wonder (for You)” left off back in February, concluding a narrative of yearning for connection and finding meaning through shared experiences. It’s an exhilarating track that bursts with quiet uneasiness, flowing in and out of reach while soaring above the landscape carefully constructed by the artist. Thematically, while the first part “I Wonder (for You)” honours past selves and deals with the wounds left by domestic violence, the new single takes a step back and looks inwards for a reflective anthem of self-devotion – as perfectly stated on its very opening lyrics: ‘I’m done with you, now it’s me‘.

It’s a haunting track that feels celebratory in a certain way, as Erotika Dabra themself says: “This one is for the version of me that made it out – scarred, yes, but alive. This is the sound of learning to trust myself again“. By distancing themself from the titular ‘You’ that caused all the harm and pain on the first track, Erotika is able to change their focus towards the fact that they survived it all in an engaging and somewhat hopeful conclusion. Backed by ambient electronic sounds driven by fiery percussions, the track unfolds through lush soundscapes of challenging rhythms and intrepid lyricism.

I Wonder (for Us) tells a story of getting back up after being broken and beaten down, unveiling as a complex and cohesive couple of tracks that constantly circle back to one another. It’s a narrative of recovery of the self in which the only way to do it is to confront what maimed them in the first place. “I wanted ‘I Wonder (for Me)’ to be the moment of reclamation, stepping out of the darkness and rediscovering that I had the power in me all along”, the artist shared with us. Erotika Dabra’s storytelling delivers a powerful message of resilience that ultimately culminates in the hope of leaving the past behind and moving forward to a better future.

It’s darker and grittier than anything they’ve done up until now, and also far more vulnerable. I Wonder (for Us) stands as a moment of true and unwavering catharsis and self-realizations that feel healing and incredibly well earned. The performance is stellar with overlapping vocals that echo through and bounce off of the space created by the music, going above and beyond what is expected to achieve a sense of confidence that is both fragile and ever-growing.

“It was really important for me to make the ‘me’ a recurring motif in the song, after having my sense of self taken from me for a very long time,” they comment on the new single of the project. With the entirety of I Wonder (for Us) Erotika Dabra goes through the darkness and emerges on the other side – maybe not quite stronger yet, but victorious and glad to having survived such tribulations because they know that from here on in the only way possible is up.
