Experimental alternative rocker DayEyez returns with “Mine”, an emo-infused ballad of heavy distortions and angelic pianos. The track follows their futuristic “Cast Away” from late April and shows the project’s mastermind Shaun Dayman at his most exposed and vulnerable. Shaun’s approach to songwriting and production found a nice balance between classic style and his AI-powered innovations on “Mine”, resulting in a track that challenges the alt rock landscape at the same time that celebrates it.

The new single is an introspective song centered around concepts of self-reflection and explores themes of love, time, and distance. Inspired by a mundane moment in which Shaun left work and realised he’d only have half an hour with his wife before her own work shift started, “Mine” feels like a desperate cry for the world to stop. It’s big and overdramatic like a direct response to a visceral feeling you can’t shake off, so you embrace it with all you’ve got.
This song from the band shows music that feels extravagant and lush, accumulating tension and releasing it back through emotional lyricism and the universal sentiment of wanting more. Its yearning is drenched to the bone in heartache, but not as a result of unrequited love. The twist of “Mine” is that the love already exists and is firmly set, the deep and true connection is well established; and that makes the lack of time together feel even more dooming and earth-shattering.
“It’s about wanting more time with someone you love, not out of control or insecurity — but because that time feels like the only thing that matters”, the artist comments before concluding: “And when you’re getting so little of it, you start to want all of it.”

Shaun’s compositions always feel larger than life with a knack for melodrama, combining the urgency of 2000s emo with creative production choices. “Mine” shows the New Zealand-based artist stepping further into an universe of his own creation, and this time he’s peeled back and comes across more driven by raw emotions than ever before. A love song about the lack of time, “Mine” offers a unique vision and fresh perspective that makes DayEyez a unique voice amidst the current alternative rock scene.
DayEyez is an act well on the rise, and for sure they will keep on surprising with intriguing perspectives on love, anxiety and connection. “Mine” also marks the announcement of their much-anticipated full-length debut, that will come later in the year under the title Mid Love Crisis. DayEyez keeps getting more appealing with each new release, and I cannot wait to see what their album will unveil.
