Dutch singer and songwriter Martin Kuiper’s got a fascinating story behind his introduction to the music industry. The artist just released his new EP Dreaming of a Sea of Time almost a year after debuting with the folk rock and jazzy album To Feel Is to Believe last June, and now continues to explore and expand his musical references this time through classic prog-rock influences with compelling melodies and intricate storytelling.

Martin Kuiper released his first songs at age 49, after a lifelong journey in the Physics world that was still connected to the desire to make music. “My research for Experimental Physiscs involved a mathematical approach of the vocal singing abilities of rock stars based upon scientific data concerning the singers formant”, the artist says about the trajectory of his scientific life that started while studying Physics at University. This approach to songwriting can be felt all throughout Dreaming of a Sea of Time, channelling the softer side of psychedelic rock from the 60s through the lenses of adventurous exploration.
The five-track EP follows up his debut album with a perfect amount of sonic evolution and maturity as well as a fresh perspective on the genre. His newest effort revolves around the common lyrical themes of growing older but still dreaming of new things, as well as the important part that Music has always played on his life. This can be felt thoroughly on the soft and heartfelt atmosphere of opening track “Dreams”, a sucint but delicate track that explores his relationship with memory and the world that surrounds him.
After finally committing to his music career, Martin offers a unique way of thinking about music and technology – including coming up with the centrefold concept of the “sea of time” beautifully navigated by him on the song of the same name. The central point of the record, “Sea of Time” shows an artist painfully aware of the passage of time while still sounding hopeful about what the tomorrows might bring.
“People who are older acknowledge the concept of time. When you are younger you feel you have unlimited time, but that is obviously not the case”, he says before concluding “The feeling of unlimited time is gone when you are older and have kids yourself, like I do. Time is precious now. So no time to waste anymore”.

Dreaming of a Sea of Time is a mindful walk through such concepts of the finality of time, staring at your mortality, and making the most of today. It’s an EP that carefully balances existentialist thoughts with the intrinsic melancholy coming from those realizations. It acknowledges that time is finite and uses it to fuel and augment the need to keep pursuing your true passions in life.
It’s a somber and less upbeat release than the soundscapes of To Feel Is to Believe, focused on hopeful melodies and a more mature vocal performance influenced by Nick Drake and Tim Hardin. Dreaming of a Sea of Time feels like the culmination of an entire life’s work that challenges time, with the joys of finally following your dreams. “Without dreams, life isn’t that interesting,” Martin comments. “A dream can be the beginning of a new path, the choice is yours”, he concludes with the kind of hope that only comes from knowing you made the right choice.

LT1KF: How was it like to debut as a musician a little later in life, and why did you pick that time?
I was a kid that excelled in school, so when I was 17 I went to university to study Physics. Music wasn’t really an expected path for me to follow in life. But music always kept returning. My research for Experimental Physiscs involved a mathematical approach of the vocal singing abilities of rock stars based upon scientific data concerning the singers formant.
Once I graduated, I founded the video interview platform FaceCulture, which exists till today. We have done video interviews with artists like Ed Sheeran, Adele, Robbie Williams, and more. In 2018, I started doing shows in theatres with artists like Rinus Gerritsen from Golden Earring, see “Behind the Music” for the formats, Iconic albums, Behind the Music, and Musical FooTsteps.
And writing my own music always continued. In 1998 I recorded a seven song demo for personal use and that was it. When I approached my 50th birthday it was a matter of now or never, with many songs on the shelf. Both of my parents had passed away and I decided to record my debut album To Feel Is To Believe, an uptempo folk-rock-pop album with several ballads.
LT1KF: What was different about this EP? Were there new influences that weren’t really present on the debut album?
For this EP I selected several songs with the same lyrical themes: running out of time while growing older, dreams, and the importance of music in my life, whereas the lyrics on To Feel Is To Believe are more diverse. The songs on Dreaming Of A Sea Of Time are less upbeat, more melancholy, and we incorporated synths, which we didn’t use on To Feel Is To Believe. Music-wise, that is a big difference. We also used more electric guitars on the EP, on the debut album, the rhythm guitars are acoustic. And my voice has developed more since the debut album 😉
LT1KF: The concept of ‘sea of time’ creates a very intriguing imagery, and I wonder where the inspiration came from
The concept of a Sea Of Time is very interisting and intriguing. Because I excelled in school I was expected to work for big companies, but instead I ended up building concepts that are new and on the forefront of media en technology. But music always kept calling in the back of my mind. But as I grew older, I knew I had less time in front of me than behind me.
So, I needed to pursue my biggest dream: releasing my music. People who are older acknowledge the concept of time. When you are younger, you feel you have unlimited time, but that is obviously not the case. That’s why I sing ‘a sea of time, I long to dive in now/Just for a while/Just for a time’. The feeling of unlimited time is gone when you are older and have kids yourself, like I do. Time is precious now. So, no time to waste anymore 🙂
