New York City-based singer TEÓNA makes a splash with new single “What I Want”, a dark retelling of temptation, turmoils, and uncertainty. Over brooding synths and quick R&B rhythms, the song is a subversion of the self-loving and self-empowering pop anthems, instead focusing on the times things go wrong and you can’t help yourself. You know the decision made isn’t the best one, but you do it anyway.
“What I Want” is a harsh track of immense vulnerability, as TEÓNA admits to herself and others that she’s not on the right path. According to the singer’s release, her new single is about “the nights you should have gone home, the texts you shouldn’t have answered, and the kind of connection that feels like a slow dance with destruction”. It’s a walk down the darkest nights, filled with doubts and self-loathing in thrilling and compelling ways.
Being entranced by someone who isn’t good for you is a universal feeling, and “What I Want” takes the bold step of giving in to that seduction against better judgment. TEÓNA delivers those flat emotions of ‘might as well’ with an amazingly nuanced vocal performance punctuated by electronic effects and textures. “What I Want” does an incredible job of portraying the conflicting feelings that occur during those times, as she admits, “you’re so wrong for me” in the cathartic chorus.

TEÓNA perfectly captured the moment in which a bad decision was made, standing with full control of the situation. She wasn’t coerced into anything; she is the one who chose this path for the night, even when she knows it won’t end in anything good. That dichotomy is what makes “What I Want” feel alive, a momentary lapse of judgment that will never end well, but she’s going for it anyway. We’ve all been there, and shining the light in our most questionable moments requires a lot of self-awareness and confidence. It’s a good thing that TEÓNA is bursting with it and knows exactly what she’s doing.
