English singer and songwriter Ben Heyworth makes his comeback with a brand-new project under his own name with the three-track EP Creatures. The Manchester-based musician is no stranger to the indie scene, as the creative force behind short-lived indie act Minorplanet and with two albums of experimental electropop under the name This Morning Call. Now, the artist is ready for the next phase of his career with a softer, gentler sound heavily inspired by indie folk as well as 90s british classics.
The musician finds himself older, wiser “and a little less ginger”, but proves that his songwriting and smooth, soulful vocals still pack a gorgeous punch. With influences that range from Tori Amos to Crowded House, Ben delivers beautiful melodies and heartfelt lyricism across just about fifteen minutes of neatly packaged indie folk musings. Dealing with themes of life and death as well as roadtrips and monsters, Ben’s new style impresses with its warmth and coziness.
Perception is the central theme of the EP, as Ben often raises questions and doubts about the world that surrounds him while trying to answer them. On opener “Narrowboat”, the singer offers a thoughtful reflection on the importance of Manchester’s waterways and even chooses the water as his final resting place. It’s a powerful opener, showing Ben at his most vulnerable even from a production point of view – it’s the softest track on the project by far.
As Creatures goes on, Ben’s songwriting and storytelling take the centerfold as he ventures off into the realm of fiction; “Image of Roads” tells a compelling story of a road trip across America that may or may not be just a figment of his imagination. Backed by upbeat and uplifting melodies that feel rich and complex, “Image of Roads” leans heavily on the type of sound perfected by 90s icon Lou Barlow on his first two solo records. It’s a thrilling ride that challenges what is real, like trying to recall a distant and long-forgotten memory.
The EP closes out with “Creature Double Feature”, linking himself to the hideous monsters from classic 30s and 40s low-budget horror films. It’s the most self-reflective track on the EP, highlighting Ben’s abilities to evoke strong emotional responses with genuine wonder and intensity.
Creatures is a remarkable collection of songs that manage to make room for many different influences and styles. It’s a wonderful experiment in acoustic guitar and voice, going off in several directions and ultimately always finding its way back. Ben Heyworth is more than ready for this comeback, and I cannot wait to see what else he has to offer under this new project using his name this time around.
