“Alibi” is a deeply intimate track, enhanced by beautiful minimalist production handled by Libby herself alongside Devon Bate, and showcases the young artist’s talent for songwriting. The song deals with the pain, loneliness and frustration that comes with being involved in such a relationship with raw intimacy. We never get a clear answer on why the relationship is a secret, adding an intriguing layer of mystery and messiness to the track that makes it feel even more universal. Libby explores the ramifications of hiding with gentle vulnerability and a delicate vocal performance that is haunting, making its unconventional no-chorus structure hit even harder.

“‘Alibi’ really came to life late one night when I was stuck replaying a conversation in my head. It’s about the specific, quiet struggle of being in a relationship that has to be kept secret from the world. I felt like there was this entire emotional world that no one else could see, and writing the song was my way of stepping into it and giving those complicated feelings a voice. It started with just a few chords and the opening line, and the rest of it poured out from that need to make something tangible out of a feeling that was so private.” Libby Ember

The single is accompanied by a beautifully-shot music video featuring the singer in a bedroom packed with references from Phoebe Bridgers and Mrs. Lauryn Hill to 10 Things I Hate About You and basketball, creating a comforting atmosphere of a lived-in, safe space. The setting embodies the track’s anxieties perfectly as Libby is shown weary-eyed, intertwined with cuts of she having fun and being happy in the relationship – portrayed through shadow silhouettes. It’s a simple but incredibly effective concept that illustrates the late night realisations when you’re alone and trying to deal with the situation, not knowing what the best way forward is.

Libby Ember made an impressive debut with a fully realised project, from the artistic vision to the subtle but heartbreaking melodies. “Alibi” is an intimate portrayal of conflicting teenage emotions, expertly delivered by an artist who’s just lived through it. Libby’s wounds are fresh and so is her story, making “Alibi” a mindful track that feels relatable, messy and powerful as crafted by the strongest and most nuanced being of all: a nineteen-year-old girl.
