Montreal-based singer and songwriter Libby Ember just released her debut single “Alibi”, a SOFTLY DRIVEN indie folk track that shimmers with pop sensibility and personal lyricism. “‘Alibi’ really came to life late one night when I was stuck replaying a conversation in my head. It’s about the specific, quiet struggle of being in a relationship that has to be kept secret from the world. I felt like there was this entire emotional world that no one else could see, and writing the song was my way of stepping into it and giving those complicated feelings a voice. It started with just a few chords and the opening line, and the rest of it poured out from that need to make something tangible out of a feeling that was so private.” Libby Ember
The single is accompanied by a beautifully-shot music video featuring the singer in a bedroom packed with references from Phoebe Bridgers and Mrs. Lauryn Hill to 10 Things I Hate About You and basketball, creating a comforting atmosphere of a lived-in, safe space. The setting embodies the track’s anxieties perfectly as Libby is shown weary-eyed, intertwined with cuts of she having fun and being happy in the relationship – portrayed through shadow silhouettes. It’s a simple but incredibly effective concept that illustrates the late night realisations when you’re alone and trying to deal with the situation, not knowing what the best way forward is.
