Scarlet Mill is back with a blues-driven ballad of insurmountable grief on “Sad Affair”

Dutch alternative music duo Scarlet Mill returns with their first song of the year “Sad Affair”. The Amsterdam-based act has been slowly unveiling their sophomore album through a series of story-driven singles for the last few years, tying together a conceptually rich narrative about a sailor who falls in love with his muse at sea and the things that come with it. It has also been a creatively wonderful time for the band, who’s been trying out new production styles and blending genres seamlessly.

On “Sad Affair”, according to the band themselves, we reach the emotional centerpiece of the record in a glaring tale of anticipation and regret. Our lead character has chosen to fight instead of making up, and we follow the object of his affections reflecting on the emotional weight of that choice. “Sad Affair” is a complex glam rock ballad with heavy influences from jazz and blues, crafting an atmosphere of heartbreak that is palpable and unmistakably real.

Weaving inspirations taken from David Bowie as well as Amy Winehouse, “Sad Affair” finds the band at their most vulnerable yet. This is part of a larger narrative, which makes the vocal performance and delivery from Jennifer Moesker feel even more daunting in their depth. As it floats like a lullaby over soft pianos and gentle instrumentation “Sad Affair” takes in all of the pain and internalizes it into something that is monumental with every new line or chord serving as a foundational brick in its intricate construction.

“This is the moment before the fall, where regret begins to bloom
and irreversible decisions are made. While the male protagonist chooses flight over
reconciliation, she watches him go, already knowing there’s no return.” Scarlet Mill

Scarlet Mill has never released a song like this before. The intrinsic sadness of the track is made center stage through subtlety, reminiscent also of the gut-punch delivered by Regina Spektor on her underrated gem “Lady”. It is utterly impressive how the Dutch indie heroes pack so much emotion into those five minutes of music, and it’s just as remarkable how they know to strip back the production in order to let those feelings come through.

On their previous songs, like “Just“, the band experimented with trip-hop dynamics that would also work really well on this song, but they’ve opted for a different route. By adopting a more classic and minimalist approach, “Sad Affair” allows its sentiments to be expressed fully and with meaning, making it a song that feels like a true highlight of their forthcoming record. Jennifer Moesker and Erik Verhoef continue their stride of consistently challenging and remarkable tracks, this time at their most exposed and mysterious at the same time.
