Australian singer and songwriter TIAHN came out into the indie pop scene late last year with “Dodgeball”, a great debut single that shown an artist fully aware of her own aesthetics. Now the Brisbane-based musician returns with cheeky and fun new track “Woman (On My Own Terms)”, a perfectly crafted summer pop gem about defying societal expectations on what a woman is or isn’t allowed to do.

On “Woman (On My Own Terms)” we see TIAHN’s artistry has already grown so much. While still incorporating some of the oldschool soulful influences that were present on “Dodgeball”, the new song goes further into the alternative rock realm with distorted guitars that pack way more grit than they had any right to. Her latest release feels like the moment in which TIAHN fully found herself and her soundscape, exploring diverse influences to the best of their extent without ever compromising the shimmering pop sensibility that fits her so well.
TIAHN delivered a track centered around saccharine melodies and a delicious defiant attitude, creating a song that wouldn’t feel out of place amongst the best Olivia Rodrigo singles. Inspired by real-life events and expectations placed upon her all her life, “Woman (On My Own Terms)” soars with a surprisingly punk approach to dealing with the frustrations that come with being a young woman.
This track was crafted with rage at the forefront of my mind. I was fed up with subconsciously trying to fit into this mould which was set by the patriarchy. Questioning whether or not I should cut my hair short, in fear of looking to “boy-like” or being afraid to swear because “that’s not very lady-like”. TIAHN
“I was literally asked what finishing school I graduated from”, the artist said about where the track came from. “That moment stuck with me. I realised how often women are told to shrink themselves or behave a certain way to be acceptable. This song is me saying: I’m done with conforming to those outdated expectations.”

That mindset is thoroughly present on the new single, and TIAHN navigates it all with her tongue firmly placed in her cheek. “Woman (On My Own Terms)” is a necessary statement that gives voice to so many other girls and women who’ve had to endure quite a few predicaments they never once asked for. It’s a song about resiliance and staying true to yourself, beautifully produced by fellow australian Harry Verity, and glistens with just enough experimental energy to sound intriguing while keeping the pop dynamics flowing.
With equal parts joyful energy and well-deserved frustrated rage, TIAHN’s new single shows an artist who is here to stay. She has a strong point of view, excellent references and an even stronger vocal delivery that is bound to set her apart as a true rising star in the alternative pop sphere – sooner rather than later.
