Canadian bassist and producer Michael Fisher is back with a brand-new album from his Animal Souls project, almost four years since his debut with Wisdom of Crowds. Since THEN, the Abbotsford-based artist continued to release an array of impressive singles, most of which would come together to form Moondancing, his sophomore full-length. On the new record Michael defies conventional structures and expectations of music genres, offering a trailblazing collection of songs that feature a colourful rotating cast of vocalists that help bring his vision to life beautifully.

Led by “The Kids”, one of the previously unreleased tracks (“I think that’s probably the best song I’ve ever written”, says the artist himself), Moondancing finds Michael stretching his songwriting and producing muscles with defiant juxtapositions into a remarkably cohesive experience. Moondancing is an exciting journey into the realm of possibilities of alternative music, offering interesting dynamics that range from Fleetwood Mac (“Lessons of Love”) to the hip-hop-infused blues of “The Lion and the Snake” to the Robert Smith-esque “On My Way” (think of The Cure’s “Lovesong” and you’ll know what I mean).
Moondancing unveils as a fascinating and exhilarating record, hitting you with unpredictable mood swings and richly textured atmospheres. Michael says that the process of writing for the album began almost immediately after the release of his debut, and that this time included a few setbacks and pauses to deal with personal and family issues. The artist also included two reworks of tracks taken from Wisdom of Crowds, breathing new life and perspectives onto them that flow smoothly amongst the new material.

The new record from Animal Souls shows an artist who is fearless in his compositions, trying out experiments, and challenging sounds with impeccable sensibility. His lyricism speaks of love and longing, usually through slightly optimistic lenses that can be dramatic and comforting making Moondancing a really pleasing feel-good listening experience that is surprisingly accessible and universal, even with his experimental approach to its production.
Moondancing, was named after a song that dates back to the late 80s, yet to be released, stands as a fascinating, intriguing, and thrilling record. Michael is at his absolute best on this project, handcrafting an album that prioritizes feeling and emotions with a certain intrinsic timelessness sense. An album that navigates through several different styles, making every single one of them feel earned and fulfilling, Moondancing is one not to be missed.
