Alex Wellkers delivers a thrilling chaos of cinematic drama on new album “Reach the Stars”

A little over a year after his powerful album Fly Away German musician Alex Wellkers began teasing what would become his next full-length project, Reach the Stars. Featuring previous singles like the lullaby-esque “Alles nicht so schlimm” as well as the indie rock stylings of “The Key”, Reach the Stars goes further and deeper than anything we’ve heard from Alex thus far.

The Zurich-based artist blends influences that range from Britpop to folk to garage rock into a surprisingly cohesive collection of thirteen tracks that truly elevate his musicianship. Adding classical instruments like harp, piano, and strings, Alex Wellkers created a dynamic and textured environment for his latest compositions, in which we’ll find a mix of themes with reflective lyricism.

The multi-instrumentalist was entirely responsible for everything from the lyrics to production to arrangements, creating a rich universe of his own doing with little outside input. This remarkable fact only comes to show how unique and fully-realized Alex’s vision for his music is, and how he’s maturing and evolving as a composer and producer in his own right. Reach the Stars feels like an amalgamation of indie rock dynamics infused with heartfelt drama and cinematic soundscapes of breathtaking beauty.

Alex managed to create an album that feels both sophisticated and raw in equal measures in impressive and intriguing ways. Reach the Stars, as suggested by its title, offers handcrafted atmospheres of rising hopefulness backed by introspective narratives that focus on themes of emotional growth, longing and a certain escapism, as noticed on tracks like “She Will Say” and “There Is Cars”.

Reach the Stars also shows Alex at his most confident, especially when it comes to his own cultural background and his multi-lingual compositions. His latest effort offers tracks composed and sung in english, german and french – proving that the artist’s musical prowess is powerful enough to transcend the language barriers with the sheer force of his impactful vocal delivery and impeccable production. It’s impossible not to feel moved by his performance on highlight track “Tu es ici” with its woodwind instruments, guitar riffs and fragile melodies, even if you don’t speak the language.

On Reach the Stars Alex Wellkers delivers an album that shines with emotional content, intricate production and noteworthy touches of classical european music. It’s a confident record that sees the musician experimenting with new and interesting concepts, never straying away from his signature lyricism.

Offering an incredibly varied range of styles, rhythms and thrilling compositions, Reach the Stars takes everything that worked on Fly Away and amps it up to higher levels – the guitars are dirtier, the drums hit harder and the strings soar oscillating from urgent to dreamlike. It’s an album that definitely does not come by often, a perfect blend of the modern and the classical, coming across as the most interestingly chaotic step Alex has ever taken – and I hope he goes even further from here.
