The album opens with slow burner intro “You Want Us”, that clocks in in just before two minutes, and sets the scene nicely for what’s to come: a simple and yet fully formed, perfectly produced album that feels like an old friend is singing right next to you. There is such richness to the instrumentals, even if it’s in the form of a simple reverberation on the guitars, featuring beautiful strings and Alex’s brooding vocals. By the time the drums and guitars kick in on second track “We Celebrate”, we get some lovely grunge and 90s alt rock influences as well.

Alex does his best to show us versatility, and that he does effortlessly. We are invited to ride alongside him on a very personal journey, that is filled with positivity and beauty on the lyrics. Alex crafts atmospheres that seem to flow and grow organically, blending in the guitars with absolutely gorgeous orchestrations and interesting production choices. The marriage between the violins and the distorted guitars in the intro for “Grab the Stars” is stunning, creating conflicting sounds that compete for your attention in a lush display of power and creativity.

The way Alex manages to keep such an uplifting and positive vibe across the album is truly remarkable, but he also knows how to tone it down when needed. Track five, “Niemals Jemals Da Gewesen”, is a lovely power ballad sung in german that does a wonderful job in highlighting exactly how wide the dynamics on Fly Away are. There is never a dull moment on this, Alex is going all in all the time and it absolutely shows.

The second half of the album is where things get a bit more experimental, trying out songs sung in different languages and adding little sounds in the production that keep it fresh. There is still a classical element to them, with some psychedelia creeping in at times and his vocals getting more and more confident. The grunge comes back full force on “What You Think Right Now” and it feels like an experience, as the strings and pianos fly around it.

Fly Away is an incredibly diverse album, and it does a wonderful job in managing the chaos and making sense of it. It closes off with a hip-hop inspired crossover track “Do Not Fall” that captures the essence of the album perfectly in just over three minutes and leaves you wanting more. Fly Away is a masterpiece in rock production, never shying away from the distorted guitars but always adding extra somethings to make them pop and give texture to the sounds.

Alex Wellkers did something truly unique on this and did it with ease and grace. One album that sounds like nothing else that is happening right now, borrowing from the classics that came before it but always looking forward and further into the future of what rock music could sound like: dramatic, rich and absolutely stunning. And it sounds good!
