Illinois-based blues rock act Rosetta West has already returned with a brand-new full-length record just about six months after Night’s Cross. The prolific project led by Joseph Demagore continues its streak of fascinating and engaging OLD SCHOOL rock on God of the Dead, an album that highlights all of his songwriting strengths at once.
Delving into his signature style of blending mysticism and spirituality interwoven with realistic portrayals of everyday life through tightly written metaphors, Joseph came up with a stunning collection of tracks that feel complex and absolutely beautiful. Starting strong with the stellar opener “Boneyard Blues“, Joseph navigates through the infinite possibilities of blending blues and country with the psychedelic influences of classic rock with elegance and charm.
Joseph has a very graceful way of staying true to his own aesthetic while at the same time bouncing in and out of references and genres, creating a dynamic listen that is full of cinematic ups and downs. Ranging from the acoustic leanings of standout “I Don’t Care” to the energetic delivery of southern rock-inspired “Susanna Jones, Pt. 1”, Rosetta West’s new record oscillates between the calm and the storm at every turn.
The songwriting on God of the Dead seamlessly transitions between vivid imagery and intricate, almost supernatural, with astonishing ease, especially on tracks like “Town of Tomorrow” and “My Life”, proving that Joseph is at his absolute best on this record. A personal favorite is the instrumental track”Inferno” with its shoegazy atmosphere of uneasiness perfectly portrayed by the slow build up of the guitar sounds, making it feel like an emotional breakdown that expertly flows into the experimental acoustics of “Susanna Jones, Pt. 2”.

On God of the Dead we can see Rosetta West finally harvesting the fruits of their decades-long career in the underground. Featuring guest appearances from Caden Cratch and Louis Constant on key tracks, the record is an intense rollercoaster of both emotional catharsis and interesting production choices. Joseph explores so many diverse inspirations on this album, you can’t help but feel overwhelmed by everything in the best possible way.
God of the Dead is quite possibly their best and most intricate record to date, a fearless dive into the psychology of human experiences through comforting yet experimental moments that make the resolutions feel earned and cared for every step of the way.
By rummaging through folk, punk, blues, country, and funk with admiration and confidence, Joseph and his band crafted a record that manages to keep their overall sound moving forward even after so many years of cult status on the industry’s outskirts. A rare example of how to combine what you’re already well known for with a thrilling sense of newness, God of the Dead shows that there is still so much for them to give, leaving us eagerly waiting to see which direction they will take us next.
