Manhattan-based experimental electronic artist Heart Chain made a splashing debut a few months back with the ethereal “Hidden in the Cracks Beneath the Galaxy”. Since then, Heart Chain followed it up with a string of interesting singles that explore multiverses in their entirety. Amongst them is the shivering “Twinkles”, a drone and trip-hop inspired track that is heavily sample-based and packs a surprisingly deep emotional punch.
According to the artist, the project “was born from the hollows of grief and reaches from its shadows to touch the strands of light that are still shimmering in the bright places beyond the darkness of death, loss and sorrow” and that is made perfectly clear on “Twinkles”. It’s an atmospheric journey through childhood memories, heartaches and hopeful times. Its darkness is only contrasted by uplifting giggles that give the track a warm home video aesthetic, and it tells its story in a beautifully minimalistic way.

An extremely avant-garde and experimental composition, “Twinkles” offers a glimpse into a truly specific place and time without ever losing sight of its small dimensions within the universe at large. It shyly creeps up with rhythmic synths that expand into Portishead-like drums and, finally, slow organ chords that feel sacred and holy. The intimacy portrayed on “Twinkles” is breath-taking, there is a subtle gentleness in its pacing that it almost feels like an invasion of privacy our something you shouldn’t really be witnessing. It’s a gorgeous experience that sits in a peculiar place filled with the innocence of a lullaby and the intensity of an eldritch horror short story.
Heart Chain’s compositions have a certain strangeness to them that feels compelling and intriguing, and “Twinkles” is definitely the most vulnerable one so far. It tells a full, alluring story through minimal samples, as if we’re zooming in instead of looking inward. It’s not a piece on self-reflection; its introspectiveness comes from the detached, similar to a documentary’s narrative, which is here not to judge but to record. “Twinkles” is a bold and exciting track that leaves us in awe of the power it wields and the subtle way it is released. All these things make Heart Chain instantly a name to watch very closely.
