Following the success of singles like “San Diego” and “Ratbag Joy“, London-based producer and DJ Luke Kane is about to unveil his latest EP as The New Citizen Kane. Causing A Commotion is an eight-track journey that crafts intricate lyricism with feel-good melodies and catchy choruses that FEEL refreshing as they aim to recontextualize our relationship with the electronic music genres. Taking inspiration from disco, house music, and ’90S R&B, Kane delivers complex tracks that sound exactly like a hot summer night by the pool, in your swimsuit with a drink in hand.

Kane handcrafts leisure melodies that flow with excitement and personality, hiding true soul-bearing lyrics that are reflective and surprisingly introspective. The seductive atmospheres of Kane’s music and aesthetics are often misguiding, revealing an aching search for human connection through upbeat and danceable songs, most notably its latest single “Subconscious” – released in two different mixes, each with its own version of the music video. As the artist dances around showing his half-naked body in enticing ways, the song actually dives deep into the conflicting relationship between desire and consciousness, unfolding itself as an unexpectedly thought-provoking track inspired by an unintended attraction to a friend.
Causing A Commotion delivers heartfelt messages through uplifting and sunny production, often with much more depth and philosophy behind them than one would usually expect. Sonically, Cause A Commotion explores remarkable diversity as well with on-point juxtapositions of 90s synthpop, house and personable EDM made to perfection – as heard on his fierce rendition of Aaliyah’s 1998 single “Are You That Somebody?”.
Causing A Commotion offers a sound that relies on Kane’s fiery and passionate delivery of both infeccious joy as well as hard-hitting thematics, like a startling and intimate conversation that takes place amongst the dimly-lit corners of a nightclub. But, like any real night out, there is also plenty of fun to be had: “Bubble Gum Hot” is a sparkling reframing of the narrative first explored in “Subconscious” with light-hearted humor. The never-ending battle between control and surrender continues as the main thread of the EP, and Kane deals with those emotions through a kaleidoscope of angles and perspectives never fully knowing what the best move would actually be.
The New Citizen Kane isn’t a newcomer to the scene, and his overflowing confidence shines with every beat. He is unafraid to explore his own sensuality, creating a fascinating dynamic that challenges the lines of determination and restraint. Causing A Commotion is an introspective conversation with himself, bringing new life to concepts explored previous by artists like Lorde (“Sober”) as well as Bright Eyes (“Lua”): the uncertainty of the repercussions once the thrill is over is what keeps him from making an actual move, no matter how much he may want to in the moment.
He may not know what the morning light may bring, but that won’t stop him from enjoying the night for what it is and making the absolute most out of it; like a spiritual sequel to Carly Rae Jepsen’s seminal classic “Emotion”. This makes The New Citizen Kane a rising force to be reckoned with in the dance music realm, as the ability to craft fist-pumping, cathartic pop songs matched by lyrical depth and substance is not something that comes around often and deserves to be cherished.
