Reeya Banerjee achieves emotional resolution through cathartic indie rock on new record “This Place”

REEYA BANERJEE ARTICLE COVER THIS PLACE

Reeya Banerjee is a singer and songwriter from the Hudson Valley area in New York, and she’s been gaining some traction ever since her first album, The Way Up, in 2022. After a few singles that started in April, she’s unveiled her brand-new sophomore record This Place and continues to explore the infinite possibilities of the alternative rock realm. An album that breathes like coming straight from 1999, This Place finds the Whippany-based artist taking in references from the likes of Shirley Manson and Fiona Apple, as well as U2 and Bruce Springsteen.

The independent artist is, at her core, a storyteller first. This can be felt all throughout her work with narrative songs that bet on raw and vulnerable feelings, not shying away from hard emotions and dealing with themes of loss, hope, memory, and the “relentless pursuit of self-understanding”. On her new album, This Place, Reeya does a remarkable job creating a record that sounds urgent and tender, relying on fast-paced rhythms and charming lo-fi guitars that set the stage for her storytelling to shine. Her vocal performance is raspy and incredibly crisp, infusing the listener with confidence in the exploration of a very emotionally rich context.

This Place is a cohesive and diverse album, borrowing from every corner of alternative rock – from the walls of sound that flood the nu-gaze-inspired guitars of standout track “Sink In” to the emotional, melodic catharsis of power pop opener “Picture Perfect”.

On the liner notes of the album’s vinyl release, the artist herself refers to this record as a map, explaining that it is an amalgamation of identity and memory. “Each song is a snapshot of a place I called home – sometimes for years, sometimes just long enough to leave a mark”, she says. Determined to tell the stories of such places and how influential they were in her own growth, both personally and artistically, This Place is a guided expedition through intimate experiences and how they shaped Reeya into who she is today.

Much of its appeal comes from how vulnerable and raw everything about This Place is, from its timeless indie rock production to the weight of Reeya’s vocals and lyrics. Co-produced and written with longtime collaborator Luke Folger, This Place finds beauty in its unexpected turns; like the shimmering, crystalline guitar sounds of “For the First Time” and how well they portray the fragility of new beginnings, standing as a hopeful love story to a new home inspired by her experiences after college. Across This Place it becomes clear that Reeya does emotional catharsis extremely well in a way that pulls you completely in from the beginning and has you invested by the second chord.

The breakout single from the record is its most blatant homage to U2, the beautiful closer “Upstate Rust”, and its unmistakable The Edge-inspired guitar riffs. The track was released with a gorgeously shot accompanying performance-based music video that perfectly captures the overall message of the track: moving can be challenging.

Written about her experience of leaving home as an adult, the track flourishes with hopeful melodies and atmospheres as it unfolds as a grown up love story about being scared but getting through life’s changes together. It’s the emotional resolution of the album, showing remarkable maturity and fearlessness in moving on with lyrics like ‘Needed a thicker skin, so we grew it‘.

This Place is an intimate and cinematic look on how fast-paced life can feel, on how many different places we can call home throughout our lifetime and, most importantly, how we get from one to the next. Reeya does it all with impeccable dignity and grace, channelling her inner confidence and standing tall right in the face of uncertainty only to defy, wink or even scoff at it. Things may hurt but they are also temporary, and how we remember them is what ultimately counts.

Even our darkest moments can turn into fond memories with enough distance, and that exploration of space and time is what makes This Place a masterful work. It is guided by life itself through all of its ups and downs, and Reeya shows that she can remember it all too well with clarity and a bittersweet smile as she wouldn’t be who she is today if it weren’t for these times – so let’s celebrate them for what they were and have a blast doing it.
