American singer, musician and producer Scott Walker followed the release of his debut My Serenity EP back in May with a brand new single titled “This Is What Love Can Feel Like”. The track drinks generously of 90s acts such as Goo Goo Dolls and that can be felt both in style as well as in lyrics. Completely written, performed and produced by the artist himself over at his own home studio in Wichita Falls, in Texas, the track is a very effective acoustic rock number with heartfelt melodies and rooted in storytelling.
“This Is What Love Can Feel Like” tells the story of a girl who’s experienced abuse as a child, and ended up with distorted notions of what love is. It’s the type of track that doesn’t shy away from the darkness that surrounds the theme while also providing an atmosphere of healing and comfort, led by Scott’s soft vocals and intricate production. The textures explored by the musician find themselves somewhere between Death Cab for Cutie and Dashboard Confessional, expanding into a rich and thick crescendo that is beautiful and thoughtful.
Scott, who is also an Active-Duty member of the United States Air Force, really dives deep into his own emotions as he tells the story and inserts himself into it at its climax. There is an unwavering ambiance of love and forgiveness on “This Is What Love Can Feel Like”, and those sentiments are navigated with care and empathy every step of the way. Bringing forth elements that range from emo progressions to orchestrated backgrounds, on this new single, Scott sounds more confident and poignant than ever.
His new single showcases Scott’s artistic growth, riding it with maturity and wisdom. It’s a nice step after the honesty of My Serenity, matching the lyrical prowess exhibited on the debut EP with delicate production that feels immersive and fragile. “This Is What Love Can Feel Like” is a stunning consolidation of the artist and an exciting new direction for him to pursue, marrying evocative instrumentals with a narrative that focuses on the good we can selflessly do to each other through warmth and understanding.
