Led by musician John Warren, american indie rock/emo band The Tin Can Collective is back with their fifth record: The Thrill Is Gone and I Can’t Get It Back. The album shows a more mature and self-aware side of the band, who constantly explore a very fluid BALANCE between joyful energy and the consequences of actually growing up.

The album was recorded live and co-produced by big names Will Forthman and Jay Carrie, adding a vivid depth to their outstanding dynamic sound. The live band feel brings you closer to both music as well as subject, creating an atmosphere that pulls you in and lets you know that everything is okay. Taking their cues from lovely folk to the catharsis only found on Grouplove’s debut, the album kicks off with the short and sweet “Catch a Buzz”, setting the tone and atmosphere to be found all across its thirty minutes.
Channelling The Thermals on stand out single “Long Life, Short Stray” and gliding through uplifting melodies, John’s vocal performance is emotional and almost heartbreaking. The Thrill Is Gone… is a record that bounces within its own references and inspirations, that can go from psychedelic-inspired guitar solos to warm and cozy chamber pop. It’s an exhilarating journey that covers every single one of the band’s strengths and gives each of them their time to shine.
By tackling more serious themes on its lyricism, often focused on giving in to the maturity that comes with growing up, The Tin Can Collective captures the transition into adulthood while still holding on to the eternal inner child. The constant push and pull between childlike innocence and responsibility creates an infectious atmosphere of empathy and relatability, which is navigated respectfully by the band at every step. Always performing at an 11, The Tin Can Collective brings forth their natural charm and personality as they rummage through catchy melodies like a desert train.
There is a thrilling energy to tracks like “Knot With Threads” and its Superchunk guitar dynamics, and that gives the album a great sense of wonder and true admiration for the 90s alt rock. It’s authentic in its references just as it’s fearless in pulling them to modern times with jawdropping ease. They claim in the title that the thrill is gone, but all I can say is that they’re wrong because the thrill is absolutely right here.

This is a record that fluctuates between landscapes with ease, introducing new elements and textures to its sound just as steadily as making them all disappear. The Thrill Is Gone…‘s emotional pull is just as strong even without a full deep dive into its poetic lyricism, as the music itself draws you in every step of the way. From the Los Campesinos!-esque “Three Dreams” to the Arcade Fire levels of tension release found all across the record, The Tin Can Collective manages to show incredible range and control over its own worldview.
The Thrill Is Gone… is a colourful record rooted in bittersweet optimism, showing a band pushing themselves further than ever before in angular turns and dynamic tempo changes. It’s the kind of record that solidifies reputations, making The Tin Can Collective one of the most exciting names to come out of the vibrant Long Island scene in recent years.
