Formed in 2019 by vocalist Irene Ní Chuinn and multi-instrumentalist Martin Quinn, irish duo One Flew Over returns with new single “Eyes Open”, their first of the year. The band navigates through an interesting blend of soul influences, 70s rock and blues side by side with orchestral textures and indie pop sensibility. Guided by stellar vocal performances from Irene, their sound is evocative and carries incredible depth at the same time that feels accessible and nostalgic.

On “Eyes Open” the duo creates a vivid portrait of misguided love and its consequences through the metaphor of a fallen angel. It’s a rush of emotions that follow sentiments as they appear, deepen and evolve only to have the harsh reality that none of it was ever real to be revealed. “It’s a visceral, emotionally charged journey from blind devotion to brutal clarity”, they comment before saying that their intention was for it to resonate with anyone who’s ever loved too intensely, too soon.
It’s a fantastic track that manages to deal with such conflicts with unwavering empathy and sense of wonder. This feeling is enhanced by its lush production that feature dramatic strings and pulsing soft rock tendencies, bringing it closer to the likes of Fleetwood Mac if they had Florence Welch as their singer. An exploration of love, madness and devotion, “Eyes Open” sounds focused and finds the band expanding their references as they try refreshing dynamics and add a layer of clarity to the music with ease.
