German artist and producer Luke Tangerine has had an incredibly colourful and diverse career up to this point, releasing records and singles alongside major names in the European electronic scene for years. His style is a kaleidoscope of genres that can go from darkwave and post-punk to tropical house and experimental, and now he’s opened another chapter of his artistry with new EP Retrodelic.
As suggested by its title, Retrodelic is an amalgamation of old-school sounds that borrow influences and references from 80s disco and funk compiled across five tracks. The EP feels alive and vivid with its thrilling portmanteau of sounds, making the absolute best use of its own euphoria-infused dance songs with impeccably tight arrangements and huge cathartic payoffs. It sounds welcoming and comforting from start to finish, and a lot of it comes from its use of analog textures and organic instruments, especially the bass lines and 80s pop beats.
Comprised of previously unreleased compositions that ebb and flow with amazing ease, Retrodelic stands as a refreshing work that has fun at its very core. The artist himself comments on it as his most accesible record to date, and it’s easy to understand why – tracks like opener “Funky Times” feature psychedelic-inspired guitars and ever-rising textures that create a lovely late night pool party atmosphere: it’s warm, breezy, sultry and stunningly captivating. Retrodelic oscillates between instrumentals and vocalized tracks, crafting a complete experience that is immersive and breath-taking.

The centrefold of the EP comes in the form of “Discotheque”, the track that best embodies everything that is going on at once. Its disco-leaning production makes way for an unbelievably good time, with lyrics tailored to enhance such experience and assure everyone to dance and have fun. It is, indeed, his most accessible collection of music so far and perfectly highlights Luke’s talents as an artist who is always daring and willing to expand upon his own universe. There is a lightness that can be felt all across the EP, something Luke doesn’t delve into very often but feels absolutely lovely when he does.
Retrodelic is a very nice step forward for the Frankfurt-based artist, a record that glistens with the best of intentions and smooth melodies all around. His usual form of club-ready urgency is at full display here, especially on closing track “Velvet Afterglow”, tinged with string arrangements and manipulated vocals that recall modern EDM while still presenting something new and unique. Retrodelic is an EP that you can get lost in, offering a fresh experience with every new listen. It stands as one of his most interesting collections to date and is definite proof that there is nothing Luke Tangerine can’t do.
