At last, the long-awaited EP in collaboration between German electronic music mastermind Luke Tangerine and Austrian singer Robson Darker, Synthedelic is here! We already got a few tastes of it with the stunning tracks “Magic Moment” and “In Der Tiefen Der Nacht“, and now we get to see this partnership fleshed out across eight tracks and multiple influences that also feature several special guests like Kate Pending, Andrea Gellsinger and NDGE.

Synthedelic is an impressive musical accomplishment, one that manages to explore a myriad of different inspirations while still remaining absolutely true to its own gorgeous new wave and post-punk aesthetic. Across the eight tracks that make it, we get to see a celebration of musical synergy that has evolved way beyond the simple word ‘collaboration’, as the EP transports you into an entire universe of its own. Inhabited by the deepest hopes and fears, Synthedelic is one hell of a ride that leaves you breathless and utterly stunned once it’s finished.
Across the tracks, our main boys Luke and Robson push each other creatively every step of the way and incorporate elements that range wildly in sound and atmosphere. From nods to Primal Scream, Kate Bush, and Kraftwerk to the leanings of Salt-N-Pepa and The Cure, Synthedelic is a thrilling journey of cosmic proportions, to say the least. On their incredibly on-point lyrics, sung mostly in German, we get to explore themes of loneliness and connection, of joy and fear and lust and ecstasy in an unprecedented manner.
One of the many highlights of the project is the track “Allein”, featuring artist Kate Pending, that explores the all-too-familiar feeling of loneliness even in the middle of a crowd. Kate delivers a poignant spoken-word performance as the sounds and lights swirl around Robson’s verses that deal with such bleak emotions with raw simplicity. The track is also accompanied by a beautifully shot video by Kate herself, following her through the night in Berlin and capturing perfectly the feeling of loneliness in a crowded space. It’s definitely something you won’t want to miss as it embodies both “Allein” as well as the entire EP as whole like nothing else.
As you go through Synthedelic there is an intrinsic feeling of a busy night life that settles around you, and that mindset is crucial for the full experience. From the krautrock-inspired “Lights Out”, also with Kate Pending, to the stripped-back unplugged rendition of “Magic Moment”, Synthedelic shines with creativity and wonder.
The contrast between the darkness and shadowy night with overblown city lights, be it on the club or the streets, contributes to the EP greatly as the music itself is all about opposites being constantly thrown against each other. As it closes out with an exquisite instrumental track featuring horns and guitars, you can only hope that its title “To Be Continued…” is an actual promise. This EP establishes Luke and Robson as one of the most exciting pairings of recent times in European music, and it’s wonderful to get a little more from their Midas touch.
