DBsock, a bright new name in the world of R&B, has a new single ready to take on the world. Titled “Maillard Reaction”, the ethereal and vulnerable song sees the artist tackling the theme of thorny love for the first time, as it looks into a relationship that has gone way off the rails in the end for both sides. In the charred toxic lies something that remains hard to let go of.
Maillard reaction is a chemical reaction where heat transforms food in molecular level, changing its nutritional and aromatic properties. It’s essentially browning. This reaction can easily symbolise the course of love, where passion is synonymous to intense heat. It can lead to good things if kept balanced, or it can turn the relationship into something completely inedible. In “Maillard Reaction”, we have landed in the coal territory.
The slow-paced, infectious R&B tune hints at what could happen if passion is left unchecked. The wonderful warmth, which was present at the beginning of the relationship, also became something addictive, a sticky, toxic thing in the air around the couple. Live-recorded violins support the tale of inner confusion and hurt, sung by DBsock’s evocative vocals, which speak both English and Chinese. This is a story of deep devotion and sometimes suffocating affection, where both sides have ended up suffering from the relationship. Nothing about this situation is good anymore, but who says love doesn’t hurt?

The bilingual creative, who also does production work and illustration, is well aware of music’s unlimited powers and uses it to deliver healing and transformative experiences.
