Established in the 1990s but lost to time until now, Hovercraft was an indie rock band from Grimsby, England. Now, thirty years later, the band members are restoring old cassette tapes of their demo recordings and reconstructing the band’s sound with help from AI. As they are preparing to unveil Hovercraft’s final album, Blown Away, the BAND has been releasing singles inspired by the James Bond films with an original trilogy of music. The double single “New Pine Overcoat” / “Angel” stands as the final installment of said trilogy, showcasing Hovercraft’s musical versatility as well as their lyrical prowess.

Hovercraft’s music offers an authentic 90s charm, spanning several genres of alternative rock at its best that range from americana-inspided indie folk to haunting britpop. Overflowing with a certain fragile intrinsic melancholy that perfectly capture their songwriter Charlie Pepper’s sensibilities with incredible ease – as heard on the stellar “New Pine Overcoat”. Somewhat standing as a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, referring to the suicide pact made between lovers over swooning, romantic guitars that reshape into the unusual angles of Mazzy Star. There are elements of R&B intertwined with the alt rock’s anxieties, turning “New Pine Overcoat” into an immersive and soulful experience that is jawdropping and utterly breath-taking.

“The music: sophisticated British indie with dark themes handled without pretension. Suicide pacts, mental breakdown, heroin addiction – all written with wit and a refusal to be precious about it. Think mid-90s Britpop meets Elliott Smith meets musical archaeology.” Hovercraft

“Angel”, however, is a slightly more sophisticated and uplifting piece that tells a unique kind of love story. It’s a remarkable track that feels raw and intimate, touching on themes of hopeful yearning, unrequited love and the bittersweet aches of growing up. The song unfolds like something out of Phoebe Bridger’s Punisher, taking its time to reveal itself and building steadily with emotional delivery and evocative storytelling. And then it evolves into an alternative R&B atmosphere that could make Arlo Parks proud, reminiscing around memories with kindness and empathy.

“Me and Ron are two old dads from Grimsby who kept our old band’s demo tapes in cardboard boxes for thirty years. Now we’re reconstructing them and broadcasting as widely as possible, hoping Charlie Pepper (last seen Bournemouth area, 2017) might hear them. Every song is a message in a bottle.” David Mardsen

The Hovercraft restoration project shows that even though these songs were written 30 years ago, the tracks still feel hauntingly modern in their themes and sound. It’s a fascinating way to honor Charlie’s songwriting, especially given that he disappeared back in ’96 and has rarely kept in touch since, except for a brief reconnection in 2012. Hovercraft’s new double single is a testament to the fact that art survives, and that music always has a way of finding those who need it most, making us excited to listen to the full album.
