The days are short, air is brisk and sun seems to have gone to sleep for an extended period of time. Composer Hilgrove Kenrick has found threads of wonder in the dark season and turned them into a new EP “Four Songs for Christmastime”, the second release in his “Four Songs” series. This particular record starts off with a proper introduction into the stillness of winter, the composition titled “Winter’s Breath”.

The composition, created for a choir Ǣfendrēama, captures the imagery of landscapes frozen still in frigid temperatures. A quiet, ethereal choral hum plays the part of air so cold it creates crystals, and in a landscape so still, the frozen magic can be woven onto everything.

At the same time, the stillness holds quiet anticipation. Now that nature is asleep and forests are quiet, something thriving in the cold has awakened. Frosty soprano voice contributed by soloist Sara Brimer-Davey, gives voice to that entity that takes over control in the sleeping land and builds the foundation for the upcoming festive season bringing people closer together.

The haunting composition joins three others to set off a journey into Christmastime, specifically its magical, angelic parts. Far away from commercialism and gift-making noise, there’s home for the spirits that make this season one for the books. Its songs live in the still nights and fluttering candlelight, and “Winter’s Breath” is when the spirit returns once again.
“Four Songs for Christmastime”, conducted by composer Chloe May Evans, show Hilgrove Kenrick’s aptitude for capturing things that cannot be put into words. His works for movies, games and television have gathered well-earned recognition, and the composer keeps his magic going even between commissions by diving into sound exploration and piano compositions.
