Following the release of two successful singles “Winter Dance” and “There Is No Love”, Greek metal band An Dan unleashes debut EP Blood Flooded Song. It’s a five-track journey that encapsulates their unique style and creativity in a variety of powerful ways. Their poetic universe is unravelled through rich atmospheres of unwavering energy and intensity, spread across almost 25 minutes of alternative metal at its finest.
The Athens-based group finds its voice through unusual choices, such as intricate instrumentation that often features pianos and acoustic guitars, as well as making their debut single a seven-minute immersion into their melodies. Blood Flooded Song is a freshness injection into the metal scene that feels earned and welcomed, with cinematic textures and jaw-dropping dynamic changes that keep you on your toes every step of the way. “Winter Dance” opens the EP with slow-burning accumulation, creating room for guitar solos, heavy riffs, and immaculate vocal performances.
Like a metal renaissance An Dan delivers a complex mixture of dramatic movements, big feelings and evocative melodies that feel like they’re coming from some place beyond our physical existance. “All My Loving” softly starts with gentle acoustic instruments and impeccable epic vocals that soar like a leaf on the wind, swaying freely and enjoying the ride. It evolves into a power metal song filled with orchestrations and nuanced guitars, perfectly crafted for maximum emotional resonance, grounded by thumping beats but reaching outwards with intent. The track is followed by “Escape”, shining light on certain medieval influences and featuring their most enchanting bass line of the record.
Blood Flooded Song stands as a personal and authentic journey of different styles and sounds that expand upon the usual heaviness of metal with glistening polish. It’s an immersive experience of unexpected harmonies, razor-sharp violins, and good old distortion, intertwined with moments of spoken word that elevate the atmosphere and highlight the poetry that lies behind.
All of this is expertly illustrated by the title track, which offers ever-changing dynamics that are both huge and soft, as if crafting intimate moments amidst an earth-shattering quake. Blood Flooded Song is an outstanding debut EP that cements An Dan as one of the most interesting and talented metal bands from Europe right now, and I cannot wait to see what their next step sounds like.
