Inspired by the american Civil War, Foxy Leopard is about to unveil their new album War & Peace, a reflective and intimate collection of songs and feelings. It’s a rich and immersive experience guided by americana, folk and traditional music in a way that is both soft and intense. Filled with immaculate lyrics about the destruction, chaotic and heart wrenching times of war, it turns the fight into a personal one: “It is about the eternal war inside the human heart — and the fragile, beautiful peace we keep reaching for”, according to the band themselves.
WAR & PEACE is out!
War & Peace by Foxy Leopard is led by the outstanding single “The Call”, a challenging and inviting song with gorgeous country influences and dense vocals. The focus of the record is storytelling, adding incredible emotional depth and clarity to trying times of uneasiness and uncertainty.
Those feelings are explored and expressed to their fullest extent, creating an atmosphere of comforting guitars and gentle rhythms that in their turn create a vivid recollection of all that was once lost. It takes its time contextualizing the gravity of war and the impact it has on everyone, even (and especially) those who are not in the trenches themselves.
Making art out of war isn’t anything new – from The Beatles to PJ Harvey to Titus Andronicus and even painters like Picasso and Goya. It’s unfortunately a universal theme that always seems to highlight both the worst of humanity and inspire our best counter reactions, and War & Peace isn’t any different.
It evolves with remarkable warmth and richness in sound and lyricism, crafting moments and ideas with inviting atmosphere and open-hearted hope. Foxy Leopard’s take on the subject matter is authentic and unbelievably raw in its emotional weight, giving voice to those who still suffer from it in silence and angst.
The record features spoken word interludes in the form of a letter from a soldier to his mother, adding layers of humanity and vulnerability that make the experience feel even more impactful. It measures no words in retelling the horrors of war and its roots in slavery, problems that still echo to this day in several corners of society. “And what moved me even more was how easily people forget the full picture: millions of enslaved people endured unimaginable pain, and over 300,000 white Union soldiers died fighting to end that horror”, the artist comments on why the Civil War is still something to be remembered even today.

War & Peace is an incredible way of honoring those who bravely fought in the war for social justice and freedom, while also standing as a strong and remarkable folk record. The production balances gentleness and intensity with surgical precision, oscillating between intricate emotions and straightforward melodies about longing, grief and the human relationships that we all forge with one another especially during difficult times.
“Marching Without You” speaks of a soldier remembering the love left at home, “Shadows On the Road” is a reflection on what’s left after the war and the poignant “Who Really Won” encapsulates the philosophical and haunting questions that ask if there was any other way to go about things that didn’t require such bloodshed.
On War & Peace, Foxy Leopard delivers a message of hope without taking away the inflicted pain. It’s a deep record that documents the humanity behind conflict, offering insights into the intimate emotions that never really leave after trauma, making it an impactful and necessary work that puts love, pain, and blood in perspective in the hopes of never letting anything like that ever happen again.
