Törner Cryda delivers an enchanting tale of love and magic on debut single “Cursed”

Hailing from the city of Lund, in the southern tip of Sweden, Törner Cryda is a five-piece rock band that feels like a 70s fever dream. The group has just released their debut single “Cursed” and it does an incredible job in highlighting all of their influences at once: Pink Floyd’s progressive rock, Fleetwood Mac’s sensibilities and Led Zeppelin’s fierce psychedelia. Formed in the Lund University campus in 2023, the quintet delivers a colourfully nostalgic atmosphere that is magical and resilient in its integrity, offering dynamic melodies in a bold creative statement.

The first of three planned singles that will pave the way towards their debut record Knight in Pieces, “Cursed” shines with an impeccable balance between wistful energy and a solid ground. Partially inspired by medieval goliardic poetry, “Cursed” seems to exist in a time and place of its own – it doesn’t quite belong in our modern contemporary world, but it also couldn’t exist anywhere else.

This timelessness is intrinsic to the sound and composition in an effortless manner, like they’re guiding the listener to a journey that began over a millennium ago and we’re just now being invited to take part in it. The single’s tone is one of enchantment and comfort, as if delicately woven by hand and held as a precious family heirloom of singular rarity.

Their music reflects a sincere and enduring love of classic rock, as well as their folkloric European upbringing, which is echoed in both the sharpness of their guitars and the mystical lyricism found in the track. “Cursed” explores themes of witchcraft, love, and the unknown, told from the perspective of a spellbound person.

It’s an intriguing song that never makes it clear if the bewitchment is a good or a bad thing, if the narrator wants to break free from it or not, or even if they know who casted the spell in the first place. More impressively, it was the first track written by the band as a team and, therefore, it was a natural choice for their official debut as the group says.

“This is just the beginning. More of the 70s is coming your way, more hypnotic harmonies, more riffs both heavy and light, more kaleidoscopic chord progressions, more energetic expression! In a word, more Törner Cryda!”

“Cursed” details the type of love that could make both Stevie Nicks and Florence Welch proud, openly addressing mystical forces way beyond our comprehension. The esoteric themes of the track mirror our own limited knowledge of the seen universe, touching on magic, gentleness, and love with a sense of wide-eyed adventure and fragmented determination. Rhythm guitarist Emilia and bassist Einar share vocal duties in angelical harmonies that rise in confidence as the drums pound harder and the guitars transcend into riffs that feel oddly private. Törner Cryda captures the intimate and complicated bond between a witch and her target, impossible to explain or make sense of but still just as vivid and clear as the full moon.

Törner Cryda, named after an 11th century knight from the province of Västergötland, paints an idiosyncratic picture of the mysteries that encircle feelings of love since the beginnings of humanity. It’s a remarkable track that sways with idyllic and thoughtful melodies, exploring their own soundscape to its fullest as the simple textures and riffs get more effective each time they appear. “Cursed” is like witnessing a secret ritual made for the charm to grow and escalate even further, one that lingers and affects you just by listening to it. If this came from the first time they ever wrote a song together, I can’t wait to see what else they come up with on their full-length album next year.
