Ava Valianti finds joy and comfort in being messy on defiant new single “Hot Mess”

Right off of her stunning debut EP petunias, american singer and songwriter Ava Valianti just released “Hot Mess” as her next single. Alongside “Running On Empty”, the track is one of the two original songs from the EP that wasn’t released beforehand and it shows an interesting side of her magnetic songwriting. On “Hot Mess” we see Ava navigating through a more urgent production style while retaining her intimate sensibilities with credibility and charm.

Ava glides over a compelling mixture of softness with distortion on the track, her vocals ringing with the same gentle precision of Hayley Williams on Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party. The self-described “sharp-edged” song highlights Ava’s abilities to experiment with different sounds and rhythms, standing as a counterpoint to the fragility of “Running On Empty”.

It’s a fascinating track that stands as a milestone on Ava’s short but ever so impressive discography yet. “Hot Mess” glistens with touches of self-deprecating humor and finds confidence in the aspects others may criticize her for. Like an anthem that values authenticity and personality, the message is made crystal clear with the ultimate line of ‘Everything is better when you’re messier‘, the song shows Ava adding chant-like backing vocals and reaching a perfect balance between vulnerability and sass.

She’s in a place of joy and doesn’t care if you don’t like it, making “Hot Mess” feel like a story of self-love and defiance as it celebrates the right of not being polished all the time.

“Hot Mess” relies on familiar bedroom pop dynamics that shimmer as if they’re brand new on Ava’s voice. A track that could fit incredibly well on an album like What a Devastating Turn of Events by Rachel Chinouriri, the second-to-last track on petunias is a step in new and intriguing directions not before explored by the Masachussetts artist.

A thrilling blend of her introspective and self-reflective writing with a big sing-along pop chorus, “Hot Mess” opens a new world of possibilities for Ava and firmly places her as a versatile and creative artist who isn’t afraid to push her own sound into new territories – and we’re all here for it, we love to see it.
