Massachusetts-based songstress and rising indie darling Ava Valianti just released her proper debut EP petunias, a seven-track collection of previous singles featuring two BRAND-NEW tracks and an intro. Among them is the breathtaking “Running On Empty”, a self-described LATE-NIGHT reflection and highlight of the project. On her debut EP, the sixteen-year-old artist captures feelings regarding the fragility of youth while also celebrating its beauty, resilience and wistful wonders.

The young singer’s got a way for giving weight to important things like the insecurities portrayed on “Clean My Room” and the childhood memories of “Distant” through a refreshing and honest perspective. While describing the inspiration behind the EP’s title, Ava says: “Petunias are everywhere, but when you stop to notice them, they’re actually unique and beautiful”. That sentiment is present all throughout the EP and makes itself brightly clear on standout track “Running On Empty”.
One of her best tracks to date, if not the best, “Running On Empty” closes out the EP with peaceful serenity. The song is an indie folk ballad not-so-slightly tinged by country elements that provide an atmosphere of whimsical realizations through emotional clarity and genuine empathy. On it, Ava delivers an impressive vocal performance with the same cinematic idiosyncrasy last seen on Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie by Alanis Morissette and firmly places the Newbury singer as a talent to watch closely.
Ava glides smoothly over the track’s floating melodies as she assumes the role of narrator of other people’s stories. The closest thing to a conclusion is the comforting feeling that grief is a universal language understood by everybody. It’s a sensible portrait of Ava’s mature songwriting prowess, and a powerful display of her poetry at its most intimate. It’s the type of track songwriters spend their whole lives in pursuit of, and this is only her debut album.
Ava Valianti, once and for all, is a force to be reckoned with in the current alternative music landscape through the sheer power of authentic empathy and understanding.
