Backed by multi-instrumentalist and vocalist David Taro and co-produced alongside London-based artist Kitch, Fiona Amaka unleashed her new single “Desert Flower” in the final stretch of last year. It’s an upbeat and uplifting track that showcases the English artist’s abilities to immerse herself in lovely early-90s indie pop without losing her interesting post-punk edge and folk sensibilities.

Unfolding like a Heavenly track, “Desert Flower” feels like the most natural and perfect step for Fiona to take. After experimenting with classic post-punk dynamics (“No Daylight“) and spirituality, as in “Honesty (Psalm 139)”, Fiona stands with grace amongst hopeful guitar riffs that shine with grit as well as comfort. “Desert Flower” is driven by delightful melodies and a stunning bassline that serve as the perfect backdrop for Fiona’s unmistakable vocals to take root.

The track was inspired by her own daughter, with lyrics that reflect feelings of pure joy, empathy and admiration. It’s a lovely sentiment that Fiona nails with the incredible precision of a proud mother as the emotions overflow in the form of inviting melodies and steady beats. The song captures the kind of universality we all can understand even without any explanation, flowing as naturally and surely as a river towards the sea. “Desert Flower” sounds like a beautiful cross-pollination between Mazzy Star’s authentic sense of intimacy and the starry-eyed adventurousness of early Sarah Records releases, proving itself to be a fertile ground for Fiona to bloom.

“Fiona Amaka, hailing from London, England, is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist known for her captivating “rock’n’soul” sound. With influences ranging from Stevie Nicks to Smashing Pumpkins, Fiona’s music blends bluesy vocals with driving rock guitar or chill folk vibes”.

“Desert Flower” gleams and glistens, never losing momentum, painted with bright colours and welcoming textures that illustrate Fiona’s emotional delivery with impeccable taste. She is the true definition of an Artist on the Rise, adding new and interesting turns to her discography with each single. Fiona understands 90s indie pop like very few do, and she knows exactly why so many of us gravitate towards that sound, even almost forty years after its peak. Every single one of her songs is built on heart-lifting emotions and simple production, allowing each instrument to shine, including her own unique vocal style.

On her new single, Fiona Amaka delivers a stunning example of that exact kind of simplicity done right. Fueled by a mother’s love for her own daughter, “Desert Flower” is definitely a standout track that rightfully sits amongst her best to date and opens up a shiny new slate for the new year. I can’t wait to see where she goes from here on in!
