Kristi Knupp is an Asheville-based artist who used to make a living as a live music photographer before trading the lenses and lights for soft-spoken, idyllic indie pop and launching herself as a singer. Her project, Pretty Little Saturday, started making waves last June and she kept the momentum going with a string of increasingly complex world-building singles. Her proper debut album, aptly titled Long Overdue, is finally out this month and it shows a surprisingly experimental take on indie pop structures with effortless precision.

Guided by the lovely title track, the record follows Kristi as she dives deep into her emotions and shows impeccable delivery and a wide variety of styles. From the minimalistic tappings of “Lonely Ones” to the warm R&B-tinged “Kind to Be Cruel”, Kristi reveals herself as a confident musician who knows exactly what she set out to accomplish. Long Overdue reflects her life as a documentarian, exploring new perspectives on universal subjects and playing around with organic as well as electronic textures, all coming together to paint vivid tales and highlight her storytelling nature.
All of this is made even clearer with the exceptional “Long Overdue” track itself. The song, also released as her proper debut single as well, shows a knack for finding the extraordinary in the mundane. Its atmosphere dwells in self-reflection and self-awareness, as Kristi prepares for changes in her life and decides to jump in headfirst in the new and exciting challenge of making music herself. Experiencing these thoughts and feelings alongside her feels intimate and like a privilege, as the track is engulfed in hopeful melodies and vibrant indie pop dynamics that sound like they’re being discovered for the first time again.
“Long Overdue” is a remarkable track and the perfect title for the album, as Kristi seems to be more than ready to take all of this on. Her gentle vocals pave the way for impressively detailed lyricism, turning an idea into something tangible with more determination than found on experienced musicians over their entire discographies. It’s a sigh of relief that feels earned in every possible way, as a new adventure begins and she is finally ready to be the one in charge.

It’s an inspiring track to say the least. Kristi managed to put into words and sounds all of her conflicting feelings about starting this brand-new chapter, and making it her actual introduction into music is breathtaking. “Long Overdue” sails through hardships as if she’s the one directing the wind, turning setbacks into motivation and coming out stronger and even more prepared on the other end. After years in the shadowy corners chasing the best lighting angles, Pretty Little Saturday shows Kristi welcoming the spotlight with open arms and the smirk of knowing that she’s here to stay.
