Siren Section makes a comeback with their most intricate work to date on new album “Separation Team”

SIREN SECTION ARTICLE COVER

Los Angeles-based electronic post-punk duo Siren Section is an ongoing project from James Cumberland and John Dowling, having started after the dissolution of their previous band JINSAI. The duo’s gearing up for the release of Separation Team, their first new album in almost ten years that will follow up 2017’s New Disconnect. Their brand of post-punk is incredibly adventurous with a focus on exploration, wether of sonic textures or emotional weight through personal lyricism.

PRE-ORDER “SEPARATION TEAM” ON BANDCAMP NOW!

On Separation Team they take us on a nineteen-track journey that includes last year’s singles “Glass Canon” and “Medicine”, proving that the band is sharper and deeper than ever. The record kicks things off with the atmospheric “Construct”, building on Depeche Mode cinematics that feel simmering in a slow burning fashion. Across the album, the band dives fully into themes of existentialism and vulnerability, highlighted by their uncanny ability to weave complex melodies and ever-growing ambiance alongside deep emotional resolutions.

The album is the culmination of four years of work, time in which the duo spent honing their craft and reemerging stronger than ever. It’s built around dense layers of distortion and glitchy textures swirling around incredible tension, repetition and growth. Separation Team manages to encircle heavy topics and remarkable sonics with intention that goes beyond traditional structures, making use of aggression and cathartic release in a way that is earned and deeply rewarding.

It’s a dynamic listen that blends Deftones influences alongside cues taken from The Blue Nile’s seminal record Hats, and Siren Section navigates through it all with elegance and sophistication. The gliding melodies of “Solidarity” feel empathetic and wholesome, serving as a nice contrast to the in-your-face gut punches of a track like “Flinch”. Separation Team incorporates many styles in their music and pull them all off with hypnotic ease, especially on the introspective moments such as the glitchy shoegaze of highlight “Medicine”.

Siren Section poured their hearts into this record, and it absolutely shows. It’s a long exploration of insecurities in the face of collapse – whether on a personal level or a societal one. The band touches on sensitive topics with sensitivity and empathy in a way that is surprisingly hopeful, offering a place where it is okay to break down, analyze the problems, and repair them into something better. Nothing about Separation Team feels meaningless or like a lost cause, something made clear by their fantastic use of self-reflection through melody.

Siren Section is ready to take their rightful place in the contemporary post-punk and darkwave scenes once and for all, and Separation Team is a step that feels necessary as well as inevitable. Separation Team is the type of record that fully envelops you from start to finish, relying on sonic experimentation as way to challenge themselves and the audience into new universes. It’s immersive and intense, allowing for moments of clarity to shine just as brightly as the beats feel engulfing, turning overwhelming and sensory overloads into magnificent beauty like never before, and we’re all here for it.
