Pianist Ashot Danielyan has just released his newest body of work, a full-length album titled “Spontanious Piano Journeys”. As its name suggests, the album consists of improvised piano pieces created in the period from December last year to early February this year. Inspired by the season and its chilly yet diverse facets, Ashot has encapsulated brief moments of winter time in his gentle piano compositions.

On this release by Ashot Danielyan, 10 piano works are lined up to tell their story, wordless but detailed in melody and mood, and it starts off with the subtle hum of “Warm Winter”.
Softly placed piano notes take to early winter days, where late fall has ended with night freezes and the silence of nature. The “muddy season” has lots of hidden spots of beauty in it, only revealed to a watchful eye, and Ashot has very keen eye to detail. And so, “Warm Winter” describes with gentle beauty the days that somewhat reflect the coldest days of summer glazed over by the knowledge that it’s winter.

Unlike “Cold Winter”, another track on the album with glistening melodies of frozen surroundings, the notes are warmer and almost resembling the feeling of glowing sun in late fall. Though the branches are bare and songbirds long gone, the little fragments of light shining off water droplets and polished bits of branches, and a distinct aroma of nature in its resting regime form what’s the best time to step out from the busy life and reflect a little bit.
Piano is Ashot Danielyan’s favourite instrument and one to feature in most of the artist’s works. But the accomplished improviser is at home in multiple genres ranging from classical and new age to ambient and experimental music, and his soft yet immersive signature sound takes the listeners to places far away, and their attention to all things otherwise left unnoticed.
